Joe Longoria, music lover, tennis player and software designer, will join Milton’s city council in January when he takes over the District 5 seat.
Longoria and his family moved from Dallas, Texas to Milton in 1998 when he sold his software company to a local tech firm.
“As part of the sale, I moved here to help the company integrate the software,” he said.
Now Longoria works as the regional director and product manager for Actimize, a software company in Alpharetta, but software and computers are more than a job for the father of three.
When his children, Joe, Jason and Jennifer, were young, Longoria would play computer games with them.
“We used to play a game called King’s Quest every night,” he said. “I would kind of spin it into a bedtime story for them.”
Longoria also reads techno-thriller novels by Michael Crichton and Tom Clancy, but his involvement in the Boy Scouts takes up most of his free time.
“I’ve served as a commissioner and a district chairman,” he said. “Both my sons were Boy Scouts and got to be Eagle Scouts.”
Longoria said he and his wife of 25 years, Brenda, love to dance to live music.
“I enjoy country and western dancing, but I listen to rock and roll stations on the radio,” said the music fan who listens to everything from Green Day and Third Eye Blind to Boston and Kansas.
“The beauty of having three kids is that you get exposed to a wide variety of things,” he said.
Before joining the football team in high school, Longoria played in the marching band, and he is still musically inclined.
“People might be surprised to know I have a drum kit in my basement,” he said. “On a stressful day, I’ll put on my headphones and bang on the drums.”
In his spare time, Longoria also plays doubles tennis matches at Crooked Creek, the subdivision where he lives.
“There’s always something going on in my community,” he said. “The reasons I became interested in city council parallel the reasons I got involved in the homeowners association at Crooked Creek.”
Longoria said his position as treasurer for the homeowners association at a time when the community was going through renovations helped him see the kinds of challenges the city faces.
In January, Longoria said he is looking forward to helping Milton build up parks and green space and helping with the city’s revenue challenges.

Longoria Eager To Join Milton City Council

It was truly an interesting night. Not earth-shattering, but interesting.
In Horsteown, things actually got exciting there for a little while. Councilwoman Julie Zahner-Bailey’s council slate got stomped like ugly insects, and it was kind of fun to watch.
District 1 incumbent Tina D’Aversa went down to an incredibly embarrassing and humiliating political defeat at the hands of neophyte Joe Longoria, mostly because of her hideously unethical behavior in trying to offer Longoria a bribe to get out of the race. After her defeat, D’Aversa told everyone who would listen that it was the media’s fault that she lost, and she singled out the Beacon newspaper for factually reporting on her bizarre behavior and irrational threats of retaliation and recriminations against those who refused to support her re-election. At last report, D’Aversa was standing on the side of Highway 372 chattering to herself in unintelligible gibberish and angrily shaking her fist at passing cars...
Wacky District 3 write-in challenger Al Trevillyan got hammered by incumbent Bill Lusk, and District 5 hopeful Bernard Wolff, touted by Zahner-Bailey as the savior of her evil plot to take over the city, went totally limp and got crushed by incumbent Karen Thurman. It wasn’t even close.
In the end, Zahner-Bailey’s plans to dominate the Milton City Council got butchered, and not in a good way. The poor woman would be best advised to consider getting out of politics sooner rather than later. There is almost no hope for a brazen, scheming, hyper-ambitious political gambler who foolishly goes “all in” like that and so utterly and completely craps out in public. That sort of thing tends to get folks branded as a laughingstock—assuming you’re not already regarded as such.
All in all, Election 2009 was alternately predictable and unusual, and in Milton it was a train wreck for Zahner-Bailey, one that you couldn’t help but stop and gawk at. But otherwise it was just another political day in the craziest, wackiest, and most insane circus in the south—North Fulton County.
WHAT A GUY!
Oh great, now we have 2 council members in pink shirts!
Hope he realizes that he will be sitting next to Alan during the meetings so they will need to talk beforehand about what to wear.
On his other side, Burt will be in his orange sweater - sort of like a the old Denny's decor from the 70's. :)
Joe - sounds great. Consider knocking out a couple of sit-ups.
Thanks Bill. Hey by the way you missed a couple of spots in my yard.
Why didn't Longoria show up for the High School meeting at Bethany that Patrick Burke and Katie Reeves put on a few weeks ago? All of CC will go there, yet no representation or interest from Longoria, Lusk or Thurman on that school at all. The other candidates were there, Bailey, Tart, and D'Aversa. You can talk the talk, but you ain't walking the walk Lusk, Thurman and Longoria. For something so HUGE as this affecting his district and he didn't even bother to show up. Is this how he is going to be on Council, absent? Great representation starting out, to not even show up for this meeting.
NFP Editor in Chief: Laugh it up, Chuckles! The American public loves nothing more than a good righteous fight for the underdog! Thanks for starting the sympathy chain!
The boe meeting was for the citizens input not the council. The council has met seperately with the boe to discuss options. This public meeting was to get input from citizens not low esteem council members. The ones like Tina and Julie geting up and spouting off what "they" are going to do were laughed off by those in attendance. Maybe if they work harder now they can pay for the sound barriers and horse pictures that Tina promises since she will have more time and Julie is making some income?
Better be careful about dissing Joe. I think he is Italian and those mafia types like to stick together. You might get measured for concrete shoes.
