Strength of Weak Ties; an open letter from Joe Longoria to the citizens of Milton

I firmly believe that we learn more from people of differing views than from a tight-knit circle of like-minded supporters. Our political leaders should embrace diversity of thought, not punish those who disagree.

Welcoming different perspectives and embracing disagreement is the essence of democracy. It is known as "the strength of weak ties." The idea is that our strong ties-close friends-tend to reinforce what we already know. Whereas our weak ties-acquaintances who interact with people we don't know-provide us with new insight from different perspectives.

This is important in politics because it forces people to reconsider their preconceived opinions. It is how we learn. Willingness to listen to others and to reconsider one's views is the only way to avoid becoming self-centered and absolutist.

I welcome differing opinions from people who don't agree with me. More importantly, I believe this is relevant to how we should govern our city. That is how good public figures are able to represent all their constituents. Embracing differences makes it possible to build bridges between opposing groups and interests.

My opponent for the Milton City Council, Tina D'Aversa is a hardworking public official, but she has one major shortcoming, an unwillingness to reach out for and accept opposing points of view, an inability to put herself in the other person's shoes. As a member of a close-knit group of political allies, Ms. D'Aversa lacks a diversity of inputs.

Ms. D'Aversa, in spite of her qualities, has demonstrated serious failings when faced with the pressure of the campaign. Attempting to entice me to leave the race, threatening business boycotts of those who do not support her, and spreading numerous falsehoods about my positions on issues signify an inflexibility and inability to function reasonably under stress. She should not attack people who disagree with her; she should embrace them.

It will be up to the voters on November 3rd to decide who they want to represent them from District 5. I pledge to you that if I am elected, you will never see hostility, spite, deception, or recriminations in any of my actions. I will welcome all points of view from all citizens, not just one group or another. You can count on that because that is who I am.

As always, if you would like to contact me directly, please feel free to contact me directly at: joe4milton@gmail.com or (770) 634-0080.I will look forward to working with you in the years to come to better serve our City of Milton.

Respectfully,

Joe Longoria
Candidate for Milton City Council 2009
District 5

Remember to vote on November 3rd!

We are looking forward to Nov 4, Joe! You will bring great change and leadership to Milton.

Hey John Fredericks, how much is Karen paying you to keep the latest out the Beacon?

Anonymous said...

Columbian Neck "Ties"?

Obama promised change and leadership too, look at the bull-sh_t we are getting from his promises. I am sick of politicians making promises, they NEVER mean them or KEEP THEM, AND IT'S ALL BS PROPAGANDA TO GET ELECTED.

You just figured that out?! Just remember this when you go to vote next week!

Longoria's letter is the first intelligent piece I have seen among all the garbage the candidates have been spewing forth.

We do need people who can see both sides of an issue without badmouthing everyone who disagrees.

Hasn't Longoria been the one doing the most badmouthing? Did he decide now he wants to play nice? I think it's too late to pretend he knows how to be a nice guy. He needs to find some new friends and stop hanging out with the wolves of our city.

Joe Clinton, are you a member of AA yet? You might be if Karen faces criminal charges. I hope someone, one of the soldiers maybe, files charges.

Nothing Tina has been accused of even compares to Karen and the way she victimized our military and senior citizens. Karen, how could you? You leak Bernard's family turmoil to the Beacon, yet the Beacon hasn't reported this. You are all the things people call Julie. You have lost my vote over this. My nephew has been to Iraq four times and will be going back a fifth, to protect trash like you!

Do not blame Tina's bad decisions on Longoria. Do not blame the press's coverage of Tina's bad decisions on Longoria. Blame Tina's bad decisions and press on Tina. She is the brainiac who executed them...

Anonymous said...

The Beacon has published every negative about Tina. Will they publish every negative about Karen? I think not!

The Hitler Proganda machine is in full force. Do not believe Julie's lies. She will do anything to have her puppets in action. Trust me, ANYTHING.

There are no negatives about Karen - only lies of a desperate opponent.

IMPEACH D'AVERSA!

Impeach Thurman. The GBI needs to do an investigation on her creative accounting methods. Wonder if Milton has had any tax payer funds embellezed? She would be qualified.

Anonymous said...

Impeach Julie! She is the only verifiable student of NAZI politics. Do not believe the evil....

Joe Longoria is a very nice man. I saw him tonight and feel that he has so much to offer Milton.

Anonymous said...

He must have hit on you in the bar. Is that why you like him?

Anonymous said...

Actually he did, guess he didn't recognize me in my new "hair do"?
He thought I was just some other frustrated cougar. He hit on the wrong proffessor!

Anonymous said...

Besides I thought you were the "DA" Joe.

Anonymous said...

Good Luck Joe!

You have a lot of guts to put up with all of this grief from all of these lunatics.

We will be better with you on the council once you are elected.

Joe Clinton is from Texas? So are the father-son Bush presidents. Let's see, the father gave us inflation and the son helped give us this economy. Look out Milton, Texas politicans can't manage money. Wonder if Karen is from Texas?

The fear mongers have added something new to be scared of!

It is not enough to make you scared of Sewer, Developers and Growth.

Now they want you to be scared of TEXANS! Yikes

This is ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more Texans in Milton than people who own horses.

Nice Try Tina.

Anonymous said...

So that's what's wrong with Milton...too many Texans. That explains the over abundance of Suburbans and other SUV's.

Anonymous said...

So now Tina hates TEXANS, Suburban and SUV Drivers, Residents of subdivisions - especially Crooked Creek. people who go to restaurants with bars, Bill Clinton and both the Bush presidents.

Who do you have left?

Anonymous said...

It wasn't Tina who wrote those posts but me, a Milton voter who is tired of Longoria hiding behind others to do his dirty work. I urge all of you to show your support and vote for Tina, who by the way, owns an SUV.

Where is your outrage regarding Karen's antics? You should be scared, very scared of Karen.

When people disagree with anything, they blame Tina & JBZ.

Reminds me of Fla beating Ga ,in football, year in and year out. Ga supporters find numerous others to blame. But the fact is Fla has gotten into the head of UGA players, coaches and fans.

Could that be the case here...Is JZB & Tina in your head?

P.S. I am not Tina Or JZB....but I am a Dawg fan.

Do you remember the kid in school that was just ggofy as hell and even more annoying? Didn't matter if he was right or wrong you would just assume do anything as to have to talk with him or be around him> This is Julie and Tina. They are just ineffective because no one wants to have anything to do with them, not because they are right or wrong. This is just like Julie was when I worked with her professionaly years ago.

Anonymous said...

To the poster who said "It wasn't Tina who wrote those posts but me, a Milton voter who is tired of Longoria hiding behind others to do his dirty work."

If you are responsible for the Clinton comments, the Bush comments, the bar comments and the Texas comments, there is something seriously wrong with you.

Longoria did not write the unethical emails, Longoria did not leak the story, Longoria did not file the ethics charges.

Longoria did not write the law that puts Tina in her situation. Actually Tina wrote the law. But Tina LOVES THE LAW AND WOULD DIE FOR IT.

I don't think it will come to THAT!

But if reelected she will be gone by March. The effort to replace her will cost the city money and I would rather see the money spent on parks.

So you go ahead and Joe Clinton, Texas Bush and Suburban all you want. Joe Longoria is a fine man and Tina is not an ethical woman. We just might have to wait for Spring to have the State confirm this.

You Zahnerites are absolute idiots, or disengenuous...maybe just both.

I just got an autodial from Julie, of all people.
She is "all in", as they say in Vegas. Invariably, she hides in the shadows like the wimpy Wizard of Oz, operating via dupes like Leona Cole, Paula Moore, pathetic Carol and nutty Nikky. This time, she is so desperate, the One herself has come out for her cast of candidates.
Her call says Milton will be the same if we vote her way...and it WILL!!!
In other words, no improvement, no parks, no quality of life increases, no tax relief, nothing.
Just a desperate longing for something that only exists in some minds every fall during elections. Anyone who really wants to protect, improve, save Milton needs to run away from the Z-ites as fast as they can.

Let's really do something innovative with our horse community, get parks that are the envy of the region, keep one acre,(regardless of who connects to EXISTING sewer pipes to protect the environment). Julie and her gang haven't done anything innovative in their lives. Look at Tina: uses co-hosts for events she hasn't gotten permission from, signs in places without permission, when corrected she extorts concessions or fires from City committees. She tried to veto the parks authority, didn't start disability awareness as claimed, didn't do much of anything. When an apparently reasonable opponent surfaces, she tries to bribe him to drop out...so she can save her sacred seat & title. Oh, she isn't a professor, she is an "instructor". Doesn't sound so cool.
We should be much more concerned about a man's brother going public saying he is unfit for a position of public trust, than some silly trumped up claim of an obscure company scandal.

Get real, go vote. The only truth is this IS an important election. In Dist 5, if Tina does win, we will have to pay $100k for a special election, undoubtedly, unless the City sues Tina due to her misconduct and makes her pay...which she can't.

Julie and her gang haven't run a business, held a job and most seem to have trouble selecting spellcheck when they blog. Do you really want moonbats running a $20million business, with your money and your property value at stake?

I don't.
