Police: Georgia law requires headlights in bad weather.

MILTON, GA., April 14, 2010 - Recently the City of Milton Police Department has received complaints from concerned citizens about the failure of drivers to use their headlights at the correct times.

The Milton Police Department is aware that many in the motoring public do not observe laws regarding headlights as well as they should. While the advent of automatic lights has taken the thought out of using headlights when it begins to get dark, their use is often neglected when it comes to inclement weather.

Milton's police chief, command staff and uniform patrol officers would like to take this opportunity to educate the public on the state laws that govern the use of headlights.

Georgia law requires that "every vehicle upon a highway within this state at any time from a half-hour after sunset to a half-hour before sunrise and at any time when it is raining in the driving zone and at any other time when there is not sufficient visibility to render clearly discernible persons and vehicles on the highway at a distance of 500 feet ahead shall display lights, including headlights, and illuminating devices."

To reiterate, Georgia law states that headlights must be used: at night; when it is raining; and when clear visibility for other cars and people is less than 500 feet.

The Milton Police Department encourages all motorists to use their headlights properly in compliance with state law to make your vehicle more visible to other drivers.
