Milton to host Memorial Day event.

A flyover and a speech by Brigadier General Maria Britt will be the highlight of the city of Milton's Memorial Day ceremony.

The third annual event starts at 10 a.m. Monday at city hall at 13000 Deerfield Parkway Suite 107.

The flyover by Cumming-based precision flying demonstration group Team RV will supplement a Missing Man reading and the reading of eighth-grader Amy Shehan's patriotic essay, penned for the city's first Memorial Day middle school writing contest.

The featured speaker is Britt, commander of the Georgia Army National Guard and the first female general in the Guard's history. Britt is responsible for training and equipping the 11,100 soldiers of the Georgia Army National Guard, a post she took in November 2007.

The ceremony will conclude with a roll call of local veterans who died for their country. Attendees are then invited to reflect upon the markers created in their honor along Deerfield Parkway.
