Two incumbent city council members and a newcomer were elected in Milton during Tuesday’s municipal elections.
Joe Longoria defeated Distrcit 5 incumbent Tina D’Aversa with 60.62 percent of the vote. Longoria had 1,903 votes, while Ms. D’Aversa had 1,229.
In Distrcit 1, Karen Thurman took 60.51 percent of the vote with a total of 1,889 votes. Her opponent, Bernard Wolff, had 1,226 votes.
Incumbent Bill Lusk won in Disctrict 3 with 69.82 percent of the vote. Write-in candidates gained 30.18 percent of the vote.
One write-in candidate was Al Trevillyan.
Lusk said he never took the race for granted, even though he did not think Trevillyan stood a chance of winning,.“That didn’t give me reason not to run hard like I always do,” he said. “I ran it as I would any race.”
Lusk said he is thankful for the residents who came to the polls to support him.
Mayor Joe Lockwood breezed to an unopposed victory.

Talk Shows Coming To Accessmilton.com.
All:At the beginning of the 2009 Milton campaign, we approached all six candidates offering up a talk show to each victor come November 3rd. These segments would be filmed and broadcast on Accessmilton.com. Of course, the same offer is open to the current incumbants not up for re-election.
This idea spawned from discussion Accessmilton.com has had with many Milton constituents and the fact that, in the majority of cases, they only hear from politicians during election time.
With that in mind, we wanted to ask you what you would name each show; from the mayoral position to district 4 and everything in between.
These new arm of Accessmilton.com will not stop with just our elected body, however. We plan on having monthly episodes focusing on our equestrian and golf attributes as well as our subdivision and open road neighborhoods. Needless to say, the list will continue to grow.
For those willing to be a part of this wonderful opportunity, the first episode will broadcast in January of 2010.

So What Now, Milton?

With the ballots from the '09 Milton, GA election still cooling off, numerous suggestions via residents have come to the staff of Accessmilton.com. Which begs the question; What is your idea to make our Milton stand out?
All six candidates shared their ideas in their platform. From Al Trevillyan's Economic Advisor Board to Joe Longoria's Revenue Proposals to Tina D'Aversa's Equestrian Board; all brought their plan to the game.
We have read and heard comments after the numbers were tallied and the victors announced that it is time to move on and the vigor of the past three elections has to stop. Of this, Accessmilton.com fully agrees. However, talk is cheap and actions speak volumes.
To the council elect, you have three wonderful proposals above by your former fellow candidates and now constituents.
If the bridge of Milton is not meant to be burned but mean to be built upon, then why don't the three elected offer an olive branch to their former opponent and ask that they represent them on the board of one of these proposed committees?
The bottom line is that in Milton; we are all neighbors. Thus, we all affect one another. Only working together towards a collective goal will we truly shine as one. We Are Milton.

In unofficial returns, Longoria’s 1,903 votes was more than enough to end D’Aversa’s time on council.

Letter To The Editor
About My Brother Bernard
To the People of Milton,
Based on my brother's track record as Trustee/Executor
of the Wolff family inheritance, I feel that the people of
Milton should not vote for my brother, Bernard W. Wolff,
for city council.
He has been living on family land, which is incorporated
into a Trust controlled by him, despite the fact that the
Trust explicitly forbids him from benefitting from any
Trust properties while he is in the Trustee. He is paying
no rent to anyone for his occupancy there and
is, essentially, squatting on Wolff Family Trust property.
My mother died over three years ago, and my father
predeceased her. The family Trust requires that he
distribute our inheritance to us in a timely fashion when our
last parent expires, and when he does that he is no
longer Trustee and will have to move off of the land and
will no longer be able to control the family money. For this
reason he has been stalling on acting on these directives so
that he can continue to live on family land and money. I
have lost tens of thousands of dollars in earnings on this
Trust money because of his intransigence as Trustee.
My brother has not been gainfully employed for years
according to information from an appraiser who looked
into his financial situation this past summer. He is
essentially living off of family money and is living well.
He did not "grow up" on the family land near Milton, but
instead grew up in the Buckhead region of Atlanta, going to
Atlanta City Schools. He graduated from Northside High
School in 1960. My parents were residents of Atlanta until
their death, and my brother did not leave Atlanta until he
moved to Marietta in the 1980's. He has lived in his
present residence since 2003. His present residence was a
weekend home owned by my parents, and we had little
interaction with neighbors then who were mostly farmers
and country folk, a population far different from those
inhabiting the area now. So how does he know so
much about the community around Milton?
My message to you is this: If my brother has taken
abused his responsibility to his family in this way, what
will he do to the City
of Milton?

I'm sure that you are familiar with the story about Doctor Faust, who made a bargain with the devil to obtain infinite knowledge. Faust was granted his wish, but the story had an unhappy ending when the devil claimed his part of the bargain.
We have a variation of this tale in our current election: according to publicly available lists of each candidate's contributors for the Milton City Council, candidates Lusk and Thurman are receiving significant amounts of money from those in the development community.
Now, what do you think will happen if in this case,
Thurman and Lusk are re-elected?
Millions of dollars are within reach for these contributors if Milton's ordinances can be bypassed, and uncontrolled development can be enabled by sewer extensions and zoning variances. How can such candidates be objective in their official decisions when they have received lavish sums of money to use in their campaigns to achieve their positions on the Milton City Council? Can these candidates really be trusted to enforce Milton's long range plan and resultant ordinances governing development?
There is a different twist to this Faustian Bargain in this case. It is not the candidates that suffer from the demands they must meet in return for the money, it is the citizens of Milton. Uncontrolled development is destructive to the quality of life to a community. Just ask the folks along Highway 9. The community lives with the result, not Lusk and Thurman, who are insulated from their decisions by where they live.
Voting records reveal that this is exactly
what has been happening
prior to this election.
In stark contrast Tina D'Aversa, Al Trevillyan, and I are answerable to no one other than Milton's citizens. We are private citizens funded by private citizens or by ourselves. Our campaign events have been in private homes, community clubhouses, and even horse barns with attendees sitting on hay bales.
We are seeking office to ensure that Milton will become and remain the City we were promised. We, alone, can be completely objective, and answerable solely to the citizens of Milton when zoning proposals are brought before us. We shall insist upon high quality development in compliance with Milton's long range plans, to enhance our quality of life rather than destroy it.
Let's not be subject to a "Faustian Twist". Vote for Bernard Wolff, Tina D'Aversa, and Al Trevillyan on November 3rd.

The people we elect need to uphold the law and ordinances that protect the adjacent landowners and will shape how our city looks and is governed in the future. The people we vote to serve for the next 4 years will be making decisions for Milton's Future Land Use maps that will dictate future commercial and residential zoning. These leaders will finalize the contentious issue of the sewer service delivery map, they will plan where our new City Hall will reside, and they will continue to vote on zoning variances or change zoning ordinances that will shape our city.
My family and I are voting for Bernard Wolff, write-in candidate Al Trevillyan, and incumbent Tina D'Aversa in this election because we have studied the issues closely and watched the actions/decisions on council by the incumbents. Having watched local politics in North Fulton for the 13 years we have lived here, there is no question in my mind that if not for citizens like Tina D'Aversa, Bernard Wolff, and Al Trevillyan stepping up to the challenge of public service, Milton would have been paved over years ago. A neighbor asked me this week how he could tell whom to vote for since "they all say the same thing." I told him to look at City Council voting records, campaign contributors, and where the candidates' campaign signs are located - on property owned by actual Milton citizens or on corners owned by real estate investors/developers.
Tina, Bernard, and Al are running on a platform of managed growth, no extension of sewer, and not caving in to variance after variance proposed by those who want to bend our land use laws. Let's leave the Milton we love as a haven from sprawl and high density development. A vote for Tina D'Aversa, Bernard Wolff, and Al Trevillyan will ensure our future quality of life.

I live in Milton in a residential area near State Route 9. Nine years ago this area was rural in appearance and there was very little traffic. The area is still beautiful with ample trees and green space. However, if my neighborhood is to remain a high-quality place to live, care needs to be taken by our city leaders. We need to manage growth so that we don't overwhelm our streets and services. We need area parks for children to play in. We need City leaders who care about our quality of life and who will listen to us. It is notable that the candidates I am about to recommend to you have avoided engaging in mudslinging, dirty tricks, and innuendoes. I think that candidates who engage in dirty politics to get elected will engage in dirty politics when they are in office. It therefore becomes easy to recommend these candidates.My recommendations are running their campaigns on the issues, their vision for Milton, and controlled growth, as opposed to just turning the city over to developers. All three candidates share a vision for the future of Milton. They support the preserving of Milton's green space and not allowing the unnecessary over development of businesses. Although these business will bring in a tax base the question is at what cost. As I drive through our city both Crabapple and Highway 9 I see vacant structures both old and new. Some of these structures have been vacant for years. Let's say no to those who support the developers who are pushing for this overgrowth and "yes" to Tina D'Aversa, Bernard Wolff and Al Trevillyan and preservation of the city we fought to have 3 years ago.

I moved to Milton after having been an "in-towner" for many years and traveling out here for horses since the 80s. Given our unique rural history and landscape, diversity of commercial and residential space, access to Atlanta, and high quality local schools, there is no other place in Georgia like it. Left unchecked, it seems to be a law of nature for rural areas in close proximity to metro areas to be developed until saturated. This has certainly been true in the areas around Atlanta that were "the country" not too many years ago, and are now just sprawled suburbs. They surround us. Is a "no growth" attitude sensible? Of course not. However, Milton's standards for growth and development clearly have to be set higher than surrounding communities, or we will become them. It is just common sense. Holding the line on these standards is the reason that I am supporting Tina D'Aversa, Al Trevillyan (write-in), and Bernard Wolff for the Milton City Council. I know each of them well, they are talented, experienced, and honorable people, and they share my vision for the Milton community. I urge everyone that would like to see our Milton of tomorrow much as it is today to vote D'Aversa, Trevillyan, and Wolff on November 3.

An e-mail circulated on Sunday naming me as the individual who filed a PAC with the state bearing the name "People for Milton". I was identified in this e-mail solely as "a paid political consultant of the Thurman/Lusk/Longoria group". As usual, thise-mail was only partially true as it A) exaggerated my involvement given I work only with Karen Thurman, and B) left out some very important details about me. I want this opportunity to introduce myself.
I have been a resident of Milton since before incorporation. I teach History at a local college. I am a professional equestrian who is very concerned for the future of the true, competitive, business-driven equestrian community-- not the hobby farm,donkey-owning crowd. I am not merely a political consultant, but a political consultant who was intimately involved in the 2007 Milton City Council campaigns of both Alan Tart, and Julie Zahner-Bailey.
I do not take the decision of who to work for lightly, especially when it has a direct effect on where I live and work. My decision to work for Karen came after Bernard Wolff was selected to run against her and I'd had the opportunity to learn all about him that I could. What I learned made me supremely confident that Julie had not fully vetted her candidate, that Bernard is not the least bit qualified to be on the council, and that Karen's re-election is paramount to the continued stability of Milton.
Bernard Wolff is NOT:
a.. an international businessman as evidenced by the handful of shell corporations registered under his name in Georgia and readily viewed at the Secretary of State's corporation website(http://corp.sos.state.ga.us/corp/soskb/SearchOfficers.asp)
a.. a lifelong resident of Milton, as evidenced by the same corporation documents available on the state's website which clearly shows Bernard's addresses prior to 2004 in Marietta and Atlanta. I dare say that I am the ONLY individual ororganization that is putting my money where my mouth is in this respect.
In 2004 Bernard Wolff was one of many swift-boat veterans who spoke out against then presidential candidate John Kerry. When the cameras were off, so too was his devotion to serving the public good. Milton does not need another show-boat politician. We need solid, proven leadership and devotion to service that won't go away when the excitement of the campaign is over. Vote for Karen Thurman on Nov. 3!

Dear Milton Neighbor,
Milton has trusted Tina for the last three years because she supports all of Milton. I come before you today to respectfully ask for your support. I want to serve you for four more years. We have much to accomplish and we are well on our way!
You trust me because I am a proven leader with more than 20 years of business experience who serves Milton with professionalism and integrity. During my tenure as your Milton City Council Rep. and Mayor Pro Tem, I have worked to achieve results that benefit all Milton residents. My family and I love the vision of Milton remaining rural in nature surrounded by a well balanced diverse area that complements the equestrian community - a community that chose to settle in Milton years ago.
Mayor Joe Lockwood appointed me Mayor Pro Tem with unanimous support of my fellow council members because I am a visionary leader. I have listened to you and heard your desires and needs. I understand you because I am a mother of three sons who go to school in Milton and a business owner living along the East Highway 9 border of our city and working in the community. I teach your children and I teach our future business leaders. Because of my multi-cultural background, I understand people of all cultures, abilities and backgrounds.
Our young city needs leaders who are experienced, assertive and dedicated. My decisions on City Council and the City of Milton Steering Committee have shown fiscal responsibility, accessibility for all citizens, controlled development and preservation of our rural, equestrian character while developing our Georgia 400 Gateway. My accomplishments include: Developing the city infrastructure; establishing the Milton Disability Awareness Committee, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Highway 9 Design Review Board just to name a few. My role as policymaker begins with the law, and I will uphold it - on this I will not waiver!
I promise to listen to you as I have the last three years. My decision in this election was to be positive and professional; to ask for your support based on my proven record. The desperate attempts to discredit me by the Publisher of the Beacon and my political opponent do not go without concern. But, Milton is smart enough to see through the politics to the Tina that has served you selflessly for so many years.
We have made great strides in developing our unique community but have much more to accomplish including: the appropriate development of Deerfield and Highway 9, the expansion and redevelopment of Bell Memorial Ball Park and the future development of Birmingham Park.
