Come have barbecue with Milton's finest for a great cause

MILTON, GA., Feb. 5, 2010 - As part of the Milton Police Department's ongoing fundraising efforts for the Special Olympics of Georgia "Polar Plunge," officers will be serving lunch at Dickey's Barbecue Pit in Milton Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event, known as "Tip a Cop," raises money for Special Olympics athletes and programs. When patrons stop in to get some of Dickey's famous Texas-style barbecue for lunch that day, they'll be served by Milton police officers. All tips to the officers go toward the department's fundraising efforts.

You can see a flyer for the event courtesy of Dickey's Barbecue Pit here.

"I am proud to be partnering with Dickey's Barbecue Pit for this year's Polar Plunge," said Deborah Harrell, Milton Police Chief. "It is apparent Dickey's cares for its community by raising funds for the athletes of the Georgia Special Olympics."

Harrell said officers are looking forward to being "wait staff" for an afternoon and serving the citizens in a different way.

"Tip-A-Cop will be a great opportunity for the officers and citizens to meet in a different light," she said. "I look forward to many more years working and freezing with Dickey's on this event."

Ondrea Davis, marketing and catering manager for the Milton Dickey's Barbecue Pit, said the feeling is mutual.

"Dickey's Barbecue Pit is thrilled to be partnering with the Milton Police Department in an effort to raise money for the Special Olympics of Georgia," she said. "The Special Olympics is an exceptional organization, and we hope that the Tip-a-Cop Event will encourage community excitement and participation, as well."

While at the restaurant, officers will offer commemorative Torch Run shirts and hats for a donation of $10.

Dickey's Barbecue Pit is located at 13075 Highway 9 North in the Deerfield Place shopping center.

In addition to the Tip a Cop lunch, Milton police officers are participating in the "Polar Plunge" Feb. 20 and "Cuffed for a Cause" in early spring. For the Polar Plunge, which requires officers to jump into the frigid depths of Lake Lanier, Team Milton's goal is $3,000.

Donating is fast, easy and secure. To tell an officer to "Jump in a Lake," donate to Team Milton by visiting its fundraising Web site, http://www.firstgiving.com/shawnmccarty.

All three events lead up to the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which involves more than 1,000 law enforcement officers from over 100 agencies who take part in a 1,000-mile, two-week torch relay to pass the Special Olympics Georgia "Flame of Hope" across the state. All of the nine relays converge at Emory University during the state Summer Games Opening Ceremony.

I am sure Karen and Bill will be there for some pork.

That is why they are politicians with their pork barrel spending and Alan Tart and Julie Bailey are community volunteers.
