Dear Neighbor,

I am a candidate for the Milton City Council in District 5. This second email to you addresses our city council's need for strong leadership and team building skills as it faces future growth, and explains how my business and civic background has a direct impact on my ability to serve the city of Milton.

Successful Business Leadership

As a businessman, I understand the reality of economic growth. Milton will not be the same size ten years from now as it is today. Growth is inevitable, but so is maintaining our wonderful rural lifestyle. To balance requirements in both areas, I believe my business expertise and financial background will help our city navigate the critical challenges that face us now and in the next several years.

Throughout my career, I have played key roles in the success of several software companies. I have broad experience working in every critical aspect of business. My expertise in mergers and acquisitions and my success in team building have equipped me with a deep understanding of the leadership and partnership skills necessary for solving complex problems and gaining consensus.

These skills will make a solid contribution to the work of the city council in the years ahead. You will recall that soon after the City of Milton was established, the city council engaged CH2MHill to handle virtually all city services except police and fire. This one-stop-shop approach served the city well. With the expectation of significant savings, the city council terminated the contract. Now the city council will be responsible for managing personnel and outside vendors across a range of activities. We will add a new level of complexity to our city government that will require the kind of special talent and experience that I possess.

Diversity of Thought & Unity of Purpose

Since our city was founded three years ago, a common concern expressed by many citizens and the media of Milton has been that members of Milton City Council have not always worked well together to make and execute decisions in our city's best interests.

I believe in the value of diverse perspectives when setting goals. I also recognize that differing perspectives need to be channeled into a common purpose. In both my business and civic leadership roles, I have learned to solve complex problems while motivating people of differing views and capabilities to work together to contribute to overall goals. I believe my proven ability to align groups behind a common purpose will be helpful to our city council and will benefit the citizens of Milton.

Ethical Principles

Integrity is a term we often hear around election time. To me, it is far more than just a sound bite. It is the essence of a person's character and is reflected in a person's words and actions.

It is also the guiding principle behind how I was raised, how Brenda and I raise our children, and how I choose to interact in both my personal and professional dealings. Because I value and demonstrate honesty and fair play, my friends and business associates know they can count on me to always take the high road regardless of the circumstances. The citizens of Milton can count on me, if elected, to be a city council member who demonstrates integrity.

Dedicated Community Service Leadership

I have a genuine commitment to my community with a track record of working for positive change with small to very large community organizations over many years. I have served in numerous capacities with the YMCA, local school boards, development committees, and the Boy Scouts of America. As a District Chairman for the Boy Scouts, I was part of the Atlanta Area Council's board - a board that served more than 80,000 youth and leaders - and was privileged to receive the coveted Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to the Boy Scouts.

My depth of experience combined with my desire to support my community as it deals with the challenges that we will face in the coming years, makes me want to participate in that process, and serving on the Milton City Council is the best way that a citizen can do that.

Dear Milton Friends,

My name is Bernard Wolff, and I am running for the Milton City Council (District 1, At-Large) out of deep concern over the future of our community.

When we joined Milton, you and I were promised a rural atmosphere with limited government and low taxes. Unfortunately, what I have observed in Milton planning meetings and in the decisions made by my opponent to date are not in conformance with the promise we were given. Emphasis is less on the citizens' quality of life, and more on increasing city size and revenues through "inevitable" development. Quiet "dealings" murmur in the shadows.

What is being promoted are "commercial development areas" that do not take into account their impact on our "quality of life," existing businesses that serve the community, or traffic - things that WE deeply care about.

I support the rural, low density and primarily residential community we were promised with balanced growth in defined areas. I prefer development that enhances our quality of life and long term value, and does not contribute to urban sprawl. This should occur in commercial areas that have already been identified by citizens and that are in concentrated "nodes." These nodes should blend with the surrounding community, designed in conformance with neighborhood standards, and supply the services that we want. Variances and expanded density beyond predetermined boundaries should be the rare exception and not the rule.

My vision of proper development is echoed in the fundamentals of the existing land use plan for Milton. People did not vote to become a city because they wanted Milton to become overdeveloped and dense. We are a unique community model that needs to be protected and not compromised.

I grew up here and love this land. I do not want to see its beauty destroyed in the same manner as other communities in which I have lived. I am sure you feel exactly the same.

Why can't we have the Milton we were promised? A wonderful, rural, low tax, non-intrusive government will result in increased land values, a quality of life that will attract a self-reliant and dynamic citizenry, and lower demand for government-based services. Remember that this is an "at-large" election. Candidates live in the district in which they run; however, all citizens in all districts elect them. There are less than 3 weeks until the election. Time is of the essence. Please vote for me, Bernard Wolff, on November 3rd to ensure that our future is what we were promised.

What Bernard Stands For

To ensure that Milton does not become the town we fled, but the unique town we were promised, we must take deliberate action to safeguard the promise.

On Growth and Development, I will:

Support appropriate, high quality development that promotes a variety of housing options and shopping conveniences,and adheres to our development standards without setting the stage for sprawl.

Work to acquire additional green space and pocket parks over time and protect them in the long term.

Ensure that a balance of active and passive uses is based on residents' needs.
Leverage our rural and equestrian charm in park designs - consistent with our mission and vision - capable of satisfying all segments of our citizenry.

On Fiscal Responsibility, Taxation, and Size of Government, I will:

Be conservative with your tax dollars and oppose tax increases.
Set as my top spending priorities -- fully equipped and effective police and fire departments, repair and enhancement of Milton's infrastructure, and development of parks and recreational facilities.
Keep the size of our government limited and sustainable.

Milton City Council Election

Dear Neighbor,

I am a candidate for the Milton City Council in District 5. Between now and the election I will be providing a series of e-mails addressing what I believe are the most challenging issues ahead for all of us. This first e-mail is devoted to fiscal responsibility and the provision of services in the years ahead.

Milton's #1 Challenge

Simply put, the biggest challenge Milton faces is one of revenue. As a new city, Milton requires an increase in revenue if it is to execute on the projects and deliver the services required and expected by its citizens. Milton receives this revenue from the same sources as our surrounding neighbors Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Roswell. However, Milton does not generate the same level of revenue as these cities-a fact that will weigh heavy in the coming years. How we deal with this issue will determine our future as a city. I believe my financial background and expertise will help our city navigate the critical challenges that face us now and in the next several years.

Why This Is a Challenge

Milton can be compared to the surrounding cities in a number of ways. Geographically, Milton is one of the largest, with a total area of approximately 35 square miles. Yet our population is the smallest, with an estimated 30,000 residents. When compared with the long-established communities of Alpharetta and Roswell, our per capita revenue is more than 25% lower. Even more importantly, our per capita revenue from commercial taxes is more than 30% lower. This is a significantly disproportionate difference, and we do not want to raise taxes on our citizens in order to compensate for it. In addition, we want to maintain our unique rural character, something that I consider to be our greatest strength. So, we need to put our best minds to the task of assuring adequate revenues to avoid putting Milton in a deficit situation in the coming years.

A Second Challenge

Three years ago when Milton was a brand-new city, the city council-despite some early stumbles-made substantial progress in a number of areas. A key initial decision was to engage an outside consulting firm to manage nearly all of our city services. Recently the city council decided to terminate this consulting agreement in order to source more competitively priced services from multiple vendors-so-called "point solutions"-an area where I have had considerable experience. The Milton City Council will soon be responsible for managing a wide variety of functions and service providers.

How This Impacts Milton City Council

Managing numerous service providers is not a simple task. It will pose a number of challenges and a new level of detailed oversight on the part of the city. The city council will need the right talent, skills, and expertise to manage multiple vendors. It's also important to make certain we have the strategy and the revenue in place to support such outsourcing.

Why I'm Asking for Your Support

Throughout my professional career and civic involvement, I have worked for positive change in large and small organizations. My business expertise as a leader in the software industry and my experiences on school boards, on planning committees, and in the Boy Scouts of America have required strong leadership and partnership skills. I'm at my best when making difficult and complex decisions, gaining consensus, and communicating a strategic vision so others share in what can be accomplished. Lockwood stands by his Council

In response to last week’s Political InSighter Column by [Beacon Publisher] John Fredericks titled, “Lockwood’s gamble: Trade two for one.”

Before there was even any word of challengers in this upcoming election in Milton, I made the conscious decision to support the three city council incumbents that were up for re-election. This included council members Lusk, Thurman, and D’Aversa.

This does not mean there is any collusion, voting block, or even any social interactions between us, but only three people out of seven individuals that are working hard to lead our city in a positive direction. We don’t always vote the same on issues and have different opinions on some of our city’s direction, but I believe this is healthy, productive, and what our citizens expect.
This is why I am supporting three different individuals that have worked hard for our city, along with myself, for Milton. This being said, this is in no way a reflection against any challengers and I am confident they understand my position and respect me for it.

Mr. Fredericks while you have your right to your opinion and predictions that I would not value my endorsement of Tina D’Aversa and would “abandon her campaign,” I totally disagree. For me this is not about politics and control, but about commitment, respect, and doing what I believe is the right thing. I will proudly continue to support Tina D’Aversa throughout this upcoming election!

The City of Crooked Creek?

As a City of Milton resident and supporter, I have questions and comments. I don’t know you Mr. Longoria. Granted, you don’t have a proven record politically for citizens to scrutinize. You were quick to sling mud and label D’Aversa unethical. Yet, the “buzz” is that the recent Crooked Creek HOA sponsored celebration for the new amenities, quickly turned into a meet and greet for you; complete with rhetoric that “Crooked Creek will have their gate or die.” Are “dues” being used to elect certain candidates? Could this endanger their non-profit status?

Another major concern of mine is your and Crooked Creek’s agenda regarding Cogburn Woods Elementary School. It seems clear that Crooked Creek residents are very unhappy with the recent re-districting. What is your opinion on this? Do you have all the TRUE facts? People are “blogging” that CWE is significantly overcrowded which is not true. Principal Anderson says they are 50 students over from last year and everything is under control. Next year will most likely bring issues. If you are elected, what have you promised the residents of Crooked Creek about “their” school?

I am obviously a fan of D’Aversa because I have seen how efficiently and effectively she has worked for ALL the citizens of Milton, including Crooked Creek.

No it isn’t mine but I think it sums it all up nicely. “Let’s imagine how this will go down...Longoria is elected...Crooked Creek gets gated (against the better advice of the city attorney)...has its own elementary school built...and becomes its own city...Longoria resigns because his work is done and his HOA board is happy...Hail Longoria! Milton appreciates your service. Seems like a viable candidate.”

Breaking News: Fulton commission says 'no' to Milton County

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt a resolution creating the “One Fulton County” Advisory Committee to develop strategies to maintain the existing boundaries of Fulton County.

Introduced by District 1 Fulton County Commissioner and Chairman John Eaves, the resolution is a response to legislative initiatives to recreate Milton County.
Eaves said the committee is one step in an effort to unify and protect Fulton County.

“We want to remain unified,” he said. “I think it is in the best interest of everyone in the county, in north Fulton, south Fulton and Atlanta.”

The resolution says the recreation of Milton County will add to the cost and duplication of government services.

It also says services such as jail systems, health and human services and library services can be provided more efficiently and effectively by the existing county structure.

“We as a county provide services in a very exemplary manner,” Eaves said. “Why disrupt that?”

Eaves also said reinstating Milton County will have an adverse effect on the funding of MARTA and Grady Hospital.

But District 46 State Rep. and Majority Whip Jan Jones, R-Milton, who authored the House bill to recreate Milton County, said she is not concerned about the new committee.

“It’s of no consequence,” she said. “The Fulton County Board of Commissioners will not have a vote when we recreate Milton County. They aren’t the legislature any more than I’m a county commissioner.”

Ms. Jones, a member of the Milton County Legislative Advisory Committee, said recreating the county will have no negative affect on Fulton County.

“[The Board of Commissioners] vigorously fought the incorporation of the three new cities and cried wolf that it was going to hurt the county,” she said. “The Fulton County revenues have continued to go up every year. There has been no adverse effect.”

The resolution passed 5-0 at the Board of Commissioners Oct. 7 meeting. Commissioner Robb Pitts and Commissioner Lynne Riley did not vote.

According to Fulton County spokeswoman Jessica A. Corbitt-Dominguez, Riley was at the meeting but left before the vote and did not return.
Pitts said he did not vote against the resolution out of respect for Eaves, and instead chose to abstain.

“It doesn’t make any sense. There was no need for this resolution,” he said. “The chairman can put together a group to advise him anytime. He can do that on his own without a resolution.”

Ms. Riley was unable to comment on this article due to a conference she is attending, a spokeswoman for the commissioner said.

Wreckless Driver On Bethany Road 10.9.09 / 5pm

All:

The video above was recorded on Friday, October 10,2009 at 5pm. It should be noted that Bethany Road is home to over 40 families and the speed limit is 40mph. Earlier this year, we had an auto related fatality within our neighborhood.

The vehicle in question attempted to pass me twice on a double yellow line. When the person in question saw me start to video tape them, they backed off. As you can see, however, it wasn't much.

Instead of worrying about sewer all the time, it would be wise for the city to ask those who reside within Milton's open road neighborhoods what their concerns are. If it is not constant noise it is dangerous speeders. If issues such as these aren't addressed, those who provide what is left of the "rural character" will sell out.

Remember, we are all neighbors in Milton. Courtesy should be a given.

Re-Elect Tina D'Aversa Milton City Council

News from Councilwoman Tina D'Aversa

Dear Milton Neighbor, Thank you for supporting me for re-election to the Milton City Council. Your support is tremendous, and I am forever humbled by the confidence everyone has shown me. There is one man from Crooked Creek subdivision seeking to unseat me. He has suggested and a couple media outlets have reported that I contacted him about the election and that in some way my actions were inappropriate. The allegations and the rhetoric that is being promoted by my opponent are politically motivated.

I deny any allegations that I acted unethically. My actions were in response to his interests in serving on a city board or committee in his community as a representative of Crooked Creek. Each councilmember appoints members to the city boards and committees. I have two board positions open at this time. My opponent agreed to a date to meet and discuss his interests, but he did not keep the meeting. The alleged email was a much earlier. He must have changed his mind. End of story.

I never tried to bribe him nor did I act in an unprofessional or unethical manner. The entire situation was taken out of context when presented to the newspaper and the continuation of the discussion is politically motivated.

I want to let this go so we can continue our work and have you know that my proven record and experience as your city leader is why I should be re-elected. I have served you to the highest level and worked hard for all of Milton. My accomplishments are many. I have worked hard volunteering to support our diverse community for 11 years - since 1998. For the last three years, I've had the privilege to serve as one of your seven council members. Today, I am asking for your vote on November 3, 2009 to keep me on your City Council working hard for you and the citizens of Milton.

My voting record of support is open, fair, and strong. I have worked to support the Milton Vision and to support the ideal that all citizens will be included as we develop a community our children and their children can be proud to call home; a community that embraces diversity of culture and lifestyle.

As a 20 year publishing industry executive and now as a teacher and college instructor, my experience speaks for itself.

Highlights of my accomplishments as your City Council member:

· I ensured the safety of our citizens by quickly adopting ordinances to provide an effective public safety infrastructure, fully funding the public safety department in annual budget cycles, and supporting the early deployment of an outstanding, fully equipped police and fire service.

· I encouraged quality growth and development by adopting a comprehensive zoning ordinance and adhering to our developmental standards. Including, voting to restrict building height on Georgia Highway 9 in Milton.

· I have worked to preserve our unique, rural, equestrian character and protected our natural resources and environment by consistently applying our land use policies and ordinances and voting against expansion of sewer service.

· I sponsored a resolution to establish the Milton Disability Awareness Committee to promote the inclusion of persons of all abilities in every aspect of community life through education, advocacy, and influence on public policy.

· I sponsored and the entire council approved the creation of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board to ensure public involvement in the development and expansion of our parks and green space.

· I supported the formation of a Tree Preservation Committee to ensure that the beautiful trees that help make Milton so unique are protected.

· I co-sponsored a resolution to form the Highway 9 Design Review Board to proactively enhance the quality of life and look and feel of the Highway 9/Deerfield area. We are continuing these efforts and have only just begun to work to promote the appropriate redevelopment of Highway 9.

· I have wholeheartedly supported continuing efforts to develop our 25 year Comprehensive Plan and Transportation Plan to chart our future, maintain Milton's unique and rural attributes, and provide for appropriate improvements in our transportation infrastructure.

· I supported the formation of an Historic Preservation Committee to ensure that all historic structures in the city are identified and protected.

· I am working with volunteers, consultants, and city staff to ensure that Milton is an all-inclusive community providing efficient service delivery to our citizens. We are an ADA compliant city and we have been recognized by the state for our hard work ensuring inclusion of people at all ability levels.

In my next term as your city council member, I will continue to lead in a manner supporting our citizen's Vision for Milton. I promise to:

· Preserve our city's unique history and rural, equestrian character by upholding our new 25 year comprehensive plan and zoning ordinance and not supporting the expansion of new sewer service within the interior of Milton;

· Promote appropriate development of the Deerfield and Highway 9 character areas by upholding the Highway 9 Design Guidelines currently under revision and seeking proactively to attract the type of development and business Milton citizens want on Highway 9;

· Expand Bell Memorial Park and begin the development of Birmingham Park, utilizing our Parks Authority (established by our charter) for funding;

· Increase availability of green space and pocket parks through alternative funding and partnerships with business owners and citizen groups;

· Support the development of the new Fulton County Public Library in the Highway 9 Web road area that is unique to Milton and adds to our unique character; and

· Encourage the appropriate development of our City Center and an efficient, financially viable Town Hall and Municipal Services center.

You can rely on my continued support of our community and the vision of our citizens with the same aggressiveness and vigor that I have for the last three and a half years as your City Council representative. Our City is in Jeopardy: Help Me in Protecting Our City

Dear Milton Neighbors:

When I meet with a group of supporters and especially those who still may be uncertain, I like to start my conversation with them by creating an image in their minds. Picture a two lane road intersection, with trees all around. Quiet, peaceful, and a wonderful place to live and raise your family. Now picture the same intersection, six lanes wide with high density business and residential neighborhoods all around. I've seen that happen in Alpharetta where I lived before. And this is the most important message I can convey to you, the voters who will determine the future of our city - THAT CAN HAPPEN IN MILTON! Our Equestrian heritage and rural character are being threatened.

Why is this happening? A majority of council members, including my opponent, are intent on increasing density. They claim an increased density is necessary to increase tax revenues and pay for city services. What my opponent does not tell you is that with the increased density comes greater expenses for adding and maintaining roadways and vastly increased city services, which will eliminate any surplus tax revenue. These efforts are supported by those companies that would profit from such an increase. All you need to do is look at the public record of my opponent's contributors in the last election, which included developers, suppliers, waste haulers etc.

My opponent removed me from the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee for the same reasons I am running against him - I do not agree with his position on sewer extension or increased density. He claims I represent a special interest group. WRONG! I do not represent any special interest group. I represent the citizens of Milton. I would suggest my opponent look in the mirror. He represents the special interest groups that will profit by bringing sewer and high density into Milton.

While I am emphatically opposed to increased density in Milton, I recognize there are other related issues that are equally as important. Our diverse community needs and deserves our support. They deserve to feel safe in their homes and that is why supporting our Public Safety Department is one of my highest priority items. We must do more to ensure that people in all parts of Milton receive the same level of services. The same could be said about our Parks. We need more parkland for both active and passive uses. There is no reason why our citizens should be required to pay a fee to Alpharetta for their children to participate in sports.

It is my privilege to sponsor a Proclamation by the Mayor and City Council of Milton honoring the current and alumni who participated in Milton Marching Band the last 60 years.

I played in my high school marching band and the symphonic band for four years. The opportunities for young people to grow through music programs in our schools is outstanding. Music programs and especially the marching band requires dedication and a focused work ethic. I am impressed by our young people throughout Milton and Alpharetta who participate in the band and other music programs. All three of my sons participate in public school music programs and my eldest son, Jacob is a proud member of the Milton High School marching band and symphonic band programs.

D'Aversa's e-mails to Longoria may open ethics charge in Milton

Milton — Investigations into apparent ethics violations at the state and city levels could be in Councilwoman Tina D'Aversa's future after she sent a series of e-mails from her taxpayer-paid city account to election opponent Joseph Longoria. In them she allegedly urged him to drop out of the race and join a volunteer committee.

According to the State Ethics Commission, that political use of the e-mail account violates the Ethics in Government Act adopted by the Georgia Legislature in 1986. It also appears to violate Milton's own ethics ordinance.

At press time, D'Aversa had not been charged with any ethics violations.

Rick Thompson, executive secretary for the Georgia Ethics Commission, said he could not speak directly to a specific case unless an ethics violation charge is filed.

"[But] if anybody uses e-mail or government equipment to try to influence an election in any way, then that is prohibited by the act," said Thompson.

D'Aversa said she and Longoria began contact in early September after she learned he was running for office against her. She heard he was running because he had wanted to join a Milton volunteer board but never got any response.

D'Aversa said she was trying to tell him, "I believe I have something for you that you wanted all along," because "he didn't really want to run."

They talked on the phone and over e-mails the Milton Herald received after a Freedom of Information Act filing. In the e-mails D'Aversa allegedly offered to put Longoria on the Highway 9 Design Guidelines Committee in place of Roger Festa, who also serves on another board.

In a Sept.. 3 e-mail sent from tina.daversa@cityofmiltonga.us, D'Aversa wrote: "My intention is for you to join a board or committee and withdraw your application to seek my council position serving from District 5."

Thompson said such an e-mail could constitute using government equipment in an effort to gain a contribution to one's campaign, as the hypothetical individual then could have run without opposition.

"If he runs, it hurts her campaign. It he doesn't run, then she has a great big jump. Therefore, she would secure her office, which is a contribution," he said.

D'Aversa said she doesn't believe she has "done anything inappropriate" and that all the facts have not been revealed. She said she would welcome speaking to any ethics board about it.

"It does seem as if it would be, as written and read, my intention [to remove a rival candidate]. But it wasn't my intention," she said. "Unfortunately only I know what my intentions were."

"Mr. Longoria and I know what our conversation was. Really, I wrote the e-mail too hastily and didn't think about it. My intentions were not ... to influence the election."

D'Aversa copied Mayor Joe Lockwood and City Manager Chris Lagerbloom on the e-mails, saying they should know that Longoria had tried to contact the city about volunteering but could never get anywhere. He was a citizen regardless of there being a election, and she was doing her job to serve him, she said.

"Because I am elected official, it is my job to do this," she said. "I immediately communicated to the city manager and mayor that this is what he told me. Why would I do that if I was trying to do something not above board?"

But the problem is the use of city e-mail for the conversation that involved election issues.

"We have a number of boards that you may be qualified for, and I would like to explore this you so that we can move forward without a costly election campaign," she wrote.

"I have to use the city communications opportunities," D'Aversa said. "That was initially the only opportunity I had to contact him. We use these e-mails interchangeably — there's just no way around it to accomplish everything we have to do on a given day."

D'Aversa added she talked with the city's Ethics Board members about her actions when accusations first arose she had done something unethical. However, it appears she may have stepped afoul of the city's laws, too.

Article 4, section 9 of the city's code of ethics passed in October 2008 says "no City Official or Employee shall make use of government time or equipment to aid a political candidate, party or cause."

There could also be problems relating to D'Aversa's assertion she could appoint Longoria to a city board for getting out of the race. Such appointments are meant to be objective.

Independent legal counsel contacted by the Milton Herald confirmed such action could be seen as a "quid pro quo" situation. Milton's ethics ordinance prohibits "[Council members engaging] in conduct which is unbecoming to a member or which constitutes a breach of public trust."

City Attorney Ken Jarrard said he would not speculate on the matter. Calls to Todd Ashley, the city Ethics Board chairman, were not returned.

D'Aversa said in no way was the volunteer appointment an effort to "buy off" Longoria. The councilwoman said she welcomes competition in the election — which seems to contrast what she wrote in another Sept. 3 e-mail to Longoria: "You can be involved without trying to take the position I worked so hard and so successfully to fill."

For his part, Longoria, a Crooked Creek resident, said the situation is unfortunate. He said after unsuccessfully exploring voluntarism the "logical next step" was running for office.

Longoria said D'Aversa's assertion that he didn't really want to run wasn't fair.

"I think Tina was a little bit surprised I was running — she obviously didn't want any opposition in the race," he said. "Nobody knew I was going to run. But if I didn't want to run, I wouldn't have put my name into the hat."

The first Milton Peoples Forum will be held at Shannondale Farm in Milton Thursday, Oct. 15. The event will start at 7p.m. with a meet-and-greet until 7:40 p.m. The forum will kick off at 7:45 p.m.

Shannondale Farm is located at 2225 Birmingham Road in Milton.Food and refreshments will be complimentary and provided by local Milton businesses, including Philly Pretzel Factory, Power Realty and the Beverage Depot, among others.

This event has been organized by Milton neighbors and will be a part of the electoral process going forward. Hosting the event are David and Julie Shannon of Shannondale Farms. "Julie and I are honored to host the first Milton Peoples Forum," said David Shannon. "We look forward to seeing our Milton neighbors that night."

LONGORIA KICKOFF TURNS OUT 80 ENTHUSIASTS

Milton Council candidate and political neophyte Joe Longoria turned out about 80 guests at his campaign kick-off fundraiser early this week in Milton at El Azteca Restaurant on Highway 9. Longoria’s crowd was mostly from the Crooked Creek subdivision, where he has overwhelming support. This bodes well for the newcomer. Incumbents Bill Lusk and Karen Thurman, both running for re-election attended, but are staying officially neutral in the race. Longoria is looking to oust embattled incumbent Tina D’Aversa in District 5.

LOCKWOOD’S GAMBLE: TRADES TWO FOR ONE

Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood placed his bet down and now he’s stuck with it. Trying to keep his majority of four votes on the Milton city council, Lockwood has endorsed Bill Lusk, Karen Thurman and Tina D’Aversa for re-election. The truth of the matter is that Lockwood needs Lusk and Thurman to win. D’Aversa – who sided against him the majority of the time in the past two years when there was a contested vote – is a throwaway endorsement. Lockwood’s policy positions and vision for Milton is much closer to Longoria’s. But he gambled and backed D’Aversa to gain political cover: he can say he is supporting “all the incumbents” for “unity and consistency” while appearing statesmanlike and not overtly partisan. But the fact of the matter is he is better off if Longoria wins, and he knows it. So we doubt he will do much for D’Aversa, apart from showing up at her events and paying her the normal political lip service. However, Lockwood is very shrewd, and he plays to win. If the D’Aversa campaign continues to unravel, he may abandon her campaign. He has the out: after her political fallout last week, D’Aversa now needs Milton Councilwoman Julie Zahner-Bailey’s full support to win. JZB controls at least 1,000 votes in Milton. To get it, she will have to cut a deal with JZB, who is on the edge of political extinction if her main candidate, Bernard Wolff, goes down in flames. D’Aversa needs JZB’s machine to win and JZB needs D’Aversa’s consistent vote to gain control of the council.
Look for Lockwood to figure this out and bail on D’Aversa, before its too late.

Dear Milton Neighbors:

My name is Al Trevillyan, and I am running as a write-in candidate for the Milton City Council (District 3 -At-Large) The election is on November 3, 2009.

I need your help. With an understanding of the issues and what is at stake, you will also understand why you need my help.

We, the citizens of Milton, enjoy a wonderful rural quality of life. When we became a city, we adopted a vision: "...preserving and enhancing our rural character." I support that vision. I believe the residents of Milton share my ideals, and I further believe a change is required in District 3 to maintain our truly special community character and quality of life.

Milton is surrounded by high density development in Alpharetta, Roswell, Cherokee County, and Forsyth County. There is a coordinated effort by a majority of City Council members to extend that high density development into Milton. My opponent, by his actions and voting record, supports high density development.

He and several others on the Council claim higher density is necessary to increase tax revenues. That, however, will require increased city services, increased traffic, and road expenditures that will consume any increased tax revenue and degrade the quality of life in Milton. Unless there is a change in the Milton City Council in the coming election, the Milton we know now will not exist in four years. When the economy rebounds (and it will rebound), there will be aggressive pressure to accelerate and approve inappropriate density increases. We must take action now. As a member of the Milton City Council, I will continue to support reasonable, managed growth and development, consistent with my tenure on the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC).

We also must actively resist attempts to increase the size of city government, which would increase taxes. Milton was established on the premise that we would deliver all city services on existing revenues. I believe it is our responsibility to the citizens of Milton to adhere to that promise. As a member of the Milton City Council, I will recommend and help establish an Economic Development Commission. This commission will help fill the empty retail buildings throughout our city and to provide guidance to the Council in developing commercial operations in appropriate sections of Milton, consistent with our comprehensive plan. Basic points in my platform are:

I will oppose high density development in residential areas of Milton.
I will not support extension of sewer service.
I will support appropriate development in the Highway 9/Deerfield and Crabapple areas consistent with Milton's comprehensive plan.
I will oppose tax increases and will insure the city operates within its means.
I will support our public safety department, crime prevention programs, and improving traffic safety.
I will support development of existing parks, reciprocity agreements with adjoining cities, and acquiring new parkland.

I need your vote on November 3, 2009. And please remember, I am a write-in candidate.

We wanted to adopt the area of Highway 9 that runs through Milton but since Highway 9 is a State Highway, the process is lengthy. We have applied for this job and hope to have this adoption finalized when the state resumes the process.

At this time, it is my honor to announce that we have adopted Milton's own Bethany Bend Road east of Highway 9.

Our goal as a family is to clean up and maintain the right of way along this road. As co-sponsor of the Hopewell Middle School Eco-Explorers Club, our environment is very important to me and my students. Adopting this small area of Milton is just one way we can all give back to our community.

I appreciate the Milton Grows Green and City of Milton for allowing my family to adopt the road. It is an honor to be a part of keeping Milton Beautiful and green!

Milton Grows Green: Adopt-A-Road

The Adopt-A-Road Program has been established by Milton Grows Green of the City of Milton in order to help maintain the aesthetic appearance of our city by holding routine sweeps of main and arterial streets. The program will be available to any subdivision, club, organization, business, school, church, or individual who is interested in performing a communityservice and help to improve the appearance and quality of living for the City of Milton.The Adopt-A-Road program will allow groups to adopt a minimum of one-half mile of roadway that has been designated for adoption by the city. If a group would like more than the minimum one-half mile they may adopt more roadway at onehalfmile intervals.

Once the roadway has been adopted and all proper paperwork filled out and turned into the Milton Grow Green Adopt-A-Road coordinator, the group will set their first scheduled clean up date. Once the cleanup is scheduled and all safety rules have been reviewed, the volunteer group leader can pick up their Adopt-A-Road Safety Kit.

The safety kit will contain many items to help keep volunteers safe on the roadways. After completion of clean up, the safety kit, recognition sign request form, and completion form will need to be turned in to the Milton Grows Green Adopt-A-Road coordinator. Approximately one month after completing the first scheduled cleanup, the city will install Adopt-A-Road signs with the group's name at the beginning of the adopted area. This area must be adopted for a minimum of oneyear and a minimum of four sweeps must be performed per year. Each time a sweep is completed, the group will complete a completion form to recording purposes. At the end of the year, the group will have first right of refusal oncontinuing the adoption of the road if they completed the previous year's requirement of four sweeps.

The group will be given this opportunity until they no longer want to participate with the Adopt-A-Road program. When the group decides it no longer wants to participate in the Adopt-A-Road program, Milton Grows Green must be contacted so Adopt-A-Road signs can be removed.It is the goal of Milton Grows Green to get the community involved with keeping our city a clean, safe place for the citizens, visitors, and businesses and with your help we can make the City of Milton a better place to live, visit andwork.

Every litter pick-up must be organized with a Milton Grows Green coordinator and Public Safety coordinator 48 hours in advance to ensure safety.Participants are also required to wear visible safety vests with gloves, and are disallowed from, among other things, removing large heavy objects, dead animals and hypodermic needles. In addition, for every six participants at or under the age of 18, one adult supervisor is encouraged to be present.
