Why Me? Why Now?

Courtesy www.mattformilton.com

Over the last two months, I have had the opportunity to talk with a number of you about supporting my campaign. I am not a career politician, nor am I a community organizer like my opponent. I am a husband, financial advisor and everyday citizen. Just like you, I love this community. I believe that protecting this community is our top priority and I have a plan to do just that, but I need your help. There are two questions I would like you to consider:

Why change now?

Milton is facing serious challenges my opponent helped create. Many businesses are going under while others are struggling to stay afloat. My opponent fought to deny a rezoning request for a horse farm owner in the Birmingham area. Children near Crabapple struggle to cross a busy road to get to school. Residents in Crooked Creek are fighting for safe roads in their community. And, the neighborhoods along Highway 9 are still looking for an identity and a positive feel for their area.

My opponent will deny responsibility for these issues. That is why I am running. For over fifteen years my opponent’s solution to these problems has been to say “no”. She has either actively denied progress and relief or simply failed to act.

This is unacceptable.

Right now approximately 86% of our city's annual revenue come from homeowners like you and me. Our business community is willing to take the pressure off of homeowners and contribute to our financial stability. Unfortunately, many of our small businesses have been delayed, denied and over regulated and are now desperately trying to survive. We cannot operate like this, Milton is better than that.

I believe the day can and must come when Milton welcomes businesses within our existing three commercial zones along with welcoming horses and people.

I believe we must all work together for the benefit of both residents and businesses in Milton. Rather than working with the Mayor and the City Council on solutions, my opponent resists and says “no.” Resisting for the sake of maintaining personal control is counterproductive at best.

There are three reasons why I hope you vote for me on or before November 8th.

First, I hope to earn your vote. My faith and my philosophy teach me that it is better to listen than to speak. I believe a team can accomplish more than an individual. As your council member I will do just what I am doing as a candidate—listen to you, our citizens.

Second, protecting our rural community is my top priority. I do not believe we should be like Alpharetta, Johns Creek or any other surrounding community. We need to be the best Milton that we can be. That means having the sufficient revenue to pay our bills. We should not wait years for and depend on county, state and federal government hand outs with strings attached to fix our horrendous traffic, roads and intersections.

Third, I understand finances. As a financial advisor, it is my job to watch the markets and successfully manage large sums of money in both good and challenging economic times. I can tell you that our current path is unsustainable. Homeowners should not carry 86% of the city's tax burdens.. I disagree with my opponent-- we cannot rely on money from Fulton County or the President to balance our books. We should not budget based on revenues we hope to get from negotiations with other governments. They are often unreliable, combative and unresponsive. We can and must be self reliant to the maximum extent possible.

With this election we have the chance to protect our economic future AND secure our rural character. We need the right ideas right now. It's time to innovate and take the next steps forward as a city. It is for these reasons that I ask for your vote on November 8th or earlier by absentee ballot.

I did not expect Matt Kunz to go negative and sling mud like past elections. Thought he was trying to move us past that. Same old same old. The accusations without substantiation is really disappointing.

Why not just run on what you can do?

Lost my vote.

I don't understand why it's OK for JZB (and AZB) to be assertive but they look at Kunz or Large as slinging mud or being hateful when they are assertive.

Well said, Matt.

Assertive? Attempting to blame the traffic problem in Crabapple on JZB (putting our children at risk) was being assertive? That was nothing short of ridiculous. She ought to also be a candidate for Jimmy Hoffa's murder and the second JFK shooter. Unsubstantiated blame on other "specific" items (denied a Horse Farm rezoning request on Birmingham Highway? Really? You don't need a zoning variance for a horse farm)was being assertive?

Bringing his "faith" into was almost sickening. Grab your wallets when that happens.

So if I get Matt's latest message, his opponent:
1) Is responsible for the traffic nightmare at Crabapple,
2) Puts our children at risk, and
3) Is against horse farms.

Is that right? Credibility is dropping like a rock.

Assertive? Just plain wow.

It seems like Matt Kunz's early position statements talked about bringing a positive accord to Milton. I guess that's out the window. Looks like another "anything to win" candidate. Hard to believe that people would sell their integrity for a shot at $13k per year.

Is this Roger Santi again?

So did everyone who comments on this site have some kind of grand vision of a utopian city in the pasture here in Milton? I have lived in a dozen small to mid-sized cities/towns in my lifetime and have yet to find one where local politics is not at least somewhat contentious. There will always be claims of impropriety, self interest, mud slinging, and grandstanding....well...because that's just the way it works in the small to mid-sized political world. Go big city, state and national and it is just a little more contentious.

So why don't you all just take a chill pill, not get wrapped up in the mostly empty words coming out of any politians mouth, and go out and make a difference youself. Get involved! Attend meetings (from what I have seen in the few I have been to - they are mostly unattended!). Join committees. VOTE - from what I have seen the last couple of elections - not many people do here!

Pease out :-)

What? Now Kunz thinks he's Roger Santi? He already claims he's a look alike for Ben Affleck and a Muppet. What's next?

This guy's website is a scream. 40% of his bio is devoted to the fact that:

a) he went to Notre Dame
b) he played football there

The best part is that he takes credit (as a walk-on, non-scholarship nobody) for singlehandedly turning around ND's season:

"Matt was the only walk-on player to travel to every game in his sophomore year, earning an Orange Bowl ring in the process. In his senior year, the team suffered four early losses under a new coaching staff. Matt asked for a meeting with the coach. The meeting spurred the greatest turnaround in Notre Dame history, from a 1 – 4 record to a 7 – 5 finish including a trip to the Independence Bowl."

Was he also instrumental in the moon landing and organizing Woodstock?

He has my vote! We need a change and his platform makes sense.

Great. Another letter from the person sent to destroy Milton.

Matt and Lance, the developers' candidates.

Matt, you write that letter as though it is completely logical. Have you driven down the streets in Milton? There are abandoned developments, empty storefronts, half-completed office buildings, and unoccupied homes everywhere. I'll tell you what we all know... we all know that building more of anything isn't going to help our revenue problem (which, by the way sounds exactly like something Obama would say). Building more is simply going to increase the blight and decrease the property values in our area. It doesn't seem that you care about that. One can only wonder why, but I think I have a good idea why...

I learn everything I need to know about you two when I drive down the street. Every single developer or person with land to be developed has your sign in their yard.

Do you want to attract voters? Issue a firm and believable promise that you will do all in your power to prevent commercial encroachment beyond the existing commercial zones and a promise to keep our commercial areas to a high standard of appearance.

Every one of your voters live in Milton because it is special. We don't want it to be Duluth or Chamblee. You need to figure that out.

Nothing is mentioned about actual playing. Did he accomplish anything on the field?

Anonymous said...

His platform makes no sense at all.

Anonymous said...

Matt, is it a sign of desperation that you are now resorting negative accusations, or is this the kind of person that you are?

If you think you have the credentials, say so. Its weak to try to win by tearing someone else down.

The "Community Organizer" comment is an insult and untrue. You have no idea what you are talking about. Ms. Bailey has more real-world business experience than you do, and clearly knows more about the law and the issues. Trying to associate her with Obama is just cheap and transparent.

You look less and less like a winner.

Anonymous said...

Is JZB posting anonymously?

Anonymous said...

Hey Matt, drove through the Providence / Birmingham Highway intersection a few hours ago. Traffic was stopped because they have started construction of the roundabout for traffic calming. Great idea that you have been touting. Guess who championed the roundabout idea? The "changes" that you keep saying are necessary are already underway. I imagine that you will take credit for that too, like you have for Notre Dame's success (without even playing?).

Anonymous said...

7:43. you mean like you, Mr/Ms Anonymous?

Anonymous said...

Not really sure what's negative about it. This is hardly slinging mud and it certainly isn't Santi. Looks like JZB has her people flooding the board.

Where were you all when she was the ONLY candidate passing out literature at the Crabapple festival?

Anonymous said...

JZB didn't come up with or tout the roundabout. Nice try.

Woodstock? I guess your trip there impaired your memory.

Anonymous said...

"Ms. Bailey has more real-world business experience than you do, and clearly knows more about the law and the issues. Trying to associate her with Obama is just cheap and transparent."

Really? Then why did her signs litter Deerfield Parkway in the right away in clear violation of the sign ordinances she champions?

Anonymous said...

JZB did come up with the Roundabout idea. That is clear. She's been pushing them for years. Doesn't matter at all, except Matt specifically mentioned Roandabouts and doing something about the Providence/Birmingham Highway intersection and its been underway for years.

Anonymous said...

So if Matt Kunz thinks there is a traffic problem in Crabapple and is blaming Julie for it, then why is he being supported so heavily by the developers (Orkin)(Weiland) and people (Wallace) who stand to gain the most from it's development and changing the density to house more people there?

Anonymous said...

The Round about idea is ridiculous for this community. Any one who support it should have their head examined. They are more into the novelty of it, than the functionality of it. No one wants the round about except city council members and those who are in planning because it's rare and unique. There are how many roundabouts in the state of Georgia? One is up going towards Helen Ga and that intersection is always a nightmare!!

Anonymous said...

The taxpayers of this community need to speak up and tell our council we want the simplest most effective and least costly way to fix our intersections, not the most novel way and expensive manner. This council likes to spend money as if it were their own endless trough.

Anonymous said...

The best cost saving thing that could be done for the city is for Julie not to be in office. She has cost all of us with her delay tactics, non-stopping talking that extends meetings and abuse of city staff time. If you want to save money, then vote for Matt!

Anonymous said...

Really? Let's move beyond that same old developer argument. What's there to develop? Milton only has 3 commercial zones. There's not a Wal-Mart coming to a country road near you. Heck, we couldn't even get a bookstore.

Anonymous said...

Why you, why now? Exactly. Why bother. We are perfectly happy with Bailey on council.

Anonymous said...

So the argument is the time she has single handedly has cost us is essentially more than the cost of 5 people (possibly adding two new more Thurman puppets to the council) to wreck this town by having influence pro development and increasing density? Wow. Great argument. I am glad she stood her ground on so many issues, otherwise we'd be on a road to looking like all our surrounding towns this very minute. Talk about a lame talking point. Kunz supporters: Ron Wallace, Adam Orkin and the same ole group of Mohrig, O'Brien, Lusk, Thurman, even Lockwood so it's a clean sweep if Tart and Bailey are out of their way, making it easy to do what they want with Crabapple especially.

Anonymous said...

Roger Santi remember him. He is supporting Kunz. Yes he still is alive and living in Milton, no one would have known that since he hasn't done a thing for this town since he ran for office last time against Bailey. He surfaced at Kunz meeting in WC rumor has it. What have you done for Milton Santi since you ran for office? you wanted to be on council so bad and cared so much about this town as you proclaimed. So many politicians dissapear and are disaffected after they lose their seat or get defeated in an election. So why surface now Santi after being so absent since the last elections? Maybe you can lend Kunz your airplane sounds like he could use a big lift! Are the people in Milton tired of this yet? This side versus that side. Its the same ole stuff regurgitated year after year. Sigh.

Anonymous said...

I agree that we could save time if Matt was elected. He doesn't have much to say (at least when actually has to talk. His written pieces are different) and all votes would be unanimous with no discussion. Great efficiency.

Anonymous said...

1:27, don't act naive. There are only three commercial zones now. There is a pack of hungry wolves drooling at the chance to get Lance Large and Matt Kunz onto the board so that they can turn Milton into the next Roswell. They are the ones (directly or indirectly) paying for these thousands of signs that you see in every developer's yard.

Have you noticed how many land lots have both "for sale" and "Kunz+Large" signs? Why do these people care so much about the election if they are about to move?

Anonymous said...

Wellllllll

I had drafted a long, critical, but fair comment. Oddly, it disappeared just as I was to post it.....

That is a great example of the problems here in Milton.

Why bother.

Let the lies and cronyism just keep on going, keep JZB and Alan, despite their malfeasance-

Sigghhh

Anonymous said...

Yeah you are right, Matt Kunz would save time. Save time for Wallace, Weiland, Orkin, Thurman, Lusk, Lockwood, Hewitt too, Longoria, Mohrig and O'Brien, Santi, etc. to develope as much as they can when the time is right without anyone or obstacles in their way. That would save a lot of time. Correct. Throw Lance Large in the mix and we have Milton on speed dial to development, which is what half our council has wanted from the very beginning. It's always about money people, always. Money and Control.
Do you want to control your town or let a small group of people invested in development control this town. Your decision.

Anonymous said...

It's the same old development argument because it IS the same old development argument. Why get off the topic of development when that is exactly why Alan Tart and Julie Bailey are being challenged for their seats. Not a made up tactic. No other reason, period.

Anonymous said...

Thanks to Matt Kunz for running in this election because the incumbent is overdone and we'd all be better off without the fear tactics, and listen for a change.

Anonymous said...

I suspect that he would be a good listener, since he clearly does not have much to say that is relevant, and knows it. The dilemma is that he won't understand what he is hearing.

What was his GPA for his American Studies degree?

We were walking past the Kunz home the other day and a vehicle with a "LUSK" tag on it drove up to the Kunz home. Kunz is a developers' candidate. We-residents of Milton-have been very well represented by Bailey and Tart. Bailey and Tart far out shined their opponents in the debate. We will definitely cast our votes for Bailey and Tart who have put the community first not developers interests.

Anonymous said...

Kunz and Large's signs are on the same exact properties well known as lusk and Thurman supporters. It could not be more obvious. How did that happen? Gee.

To every thing turn turn turn turn there is a reason, turn turn turn....
