‘Change Your Clock Change Your Battery’ Nov. 3.

Your Milton Firefighters remind you that the end of daylight savings on Sunday, Nov. 3 is time to change the smoke detector batteries in your home.

Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs have teamed up for the “Change Your Clock Change Your Battery®” campaign to remind families of this very simple task that could make the difference in surviving a home fire.

Studies have shown that having a working smoke alarm doubles a family’s chances of escaping a home fire. This program encourages families to take action by changing the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when they move their clocks back an hour Nov. 3.

“Fire departments from around the nation routinely report lives saved by smoke detectors,” said Milton Fire Marshal Matt Marietta. “With the often highly combustible contents of our homes, fire can spread fast enough to make a space uninhabitable in as little as five minutes.

“Smoke alarms alert residents at the first sign of smoke and allow them crucial seconds to escape a dangerous situation.”

Marietta said that this advanced warning is especially important at night, or when the fire is in another room, which may increase the time it takes a resident to notice the smoke and fire and consequently decrease their escape time.

This is also an opportunity for you and your family to practice exit drills in your home as you test your new smoke detector batteries.  Milton firefighters will be happy to help community members with advice or assistance in this program, said the fire marshal.
