Fulton County schools want to pay students to stay in school a little longer.

Forty students from Creekside High and Bear Creek Middle schools in Fairburn will be the first to try the "Learn & Earn" program, where students will get paid to attend after-school tutoring programs.

Students will make approximately $8 an hour, and be eligible for bonuses if their grades improve, said Kirk Wilks, district spokesman. The initial students are in the eighth and 11th grades.

There will be a community kick-off Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Creekside High media center, 7405 Herndon Rd., Fairburn.

With the support of Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts, the pilot program will last 15 weeks and pay students for participation and performance. The object of the program is to determine if paying students to study will improve classroom attendance, grades and test scores, according to a news release from the district.

The initiative is funded by Charles Loudermilk, chairman and chief executive officer of Aaron Rents, through the Learning Makes A Difference Foundation. The foundation is a local non-profit designed to improve education through creative programs.

The students chosen for the program were picked by school staff, based on attendance, grades, test scores and free or reduced lunch status, the release said.

Speechless. Who came up with this program, to pay our children to do what is required of them? This is beyond ridiculous. The only way to motivate them to have good attendance and good grades is to hand them a paycheck, and a bonus if they pass?! How about giving our teachers raises and also raising the standard for excellence instead of lowering it for everyone. I'm appalled. America is raising a generation of irresponsible, unaccoutable jueveniles who will grow up to be the same as adults.
What about the kids that study hard and get the grades and have the good attendance, should we put them on $30,000/year salary as well. Don't they deserve it for just being good students?

If those that can't make the grade get paid to try hard and excel, then those who are excellent should be compensated tenfold.

Come up with another means to motivate children to do what is required other then money!!! I'm so glad SPLOST money is being used to pay our children to learn. When are the tax payers going to take control of the FCBOE?

What next, will students be joining unions and striking for higher wages and better fringe benefits, like health insurance and paid holidays.

For goodness sakes do not let Hillary or Obama hear about this.

of course Robb Pitts is attatched to this monumental waste of our tax dollars. This is absurd!

This is just another reason that Milton County needs to be reborn. Why do you keep wasting your money on all the crap in Atlanta?

According to AJC article this is not from public funds, to the contrary, it is funded by Charles Loudermilk of Aarons Rents.

If you disagree with this concept, rather than recreate Milton County, boycott Aarons Rents.

It makes sense to create another generation of kids dependent on the governement if you are Aaron Rents.
Aaron Rents makes it's living off of the poor and those that are too dumb to know they are being taken advantage of with stupid high payments.
