Painted horseshoes donated to Milton.

Students at Hopewell Middle School decorated horseshoes to be used throughout the city. Horseshoe decorating has become a yearly event for the students.

MILTON – Slowly but surely, the young city of Milton is gearing up programs and events that can properly be called "traditions." There's the Round Up, Mayor's Walk, numerous events at Crabapple. And now horseshoes.

The Eco Explorers club at Hopewell Middle School has, for the past two years, refurbished old horse shoes and decorated them to be given to the city as community decorations. Last year's crop of shoes still hang beside many of the office doors of city staff members.

"It was such a big deal, Ms. [Debra] Lajewski and I decided to do this on an annual basis," said Eco Explorers teacher Tina D'Aversa. Both D'Aversa and Lajewski help run the club.

According to D'Aversa, the club first got to thinking about the project by wanting to do something visible for the community.

"So many of our students are on horse farms or ride horses," D'Aversa explained. "We know about the fondness for our horses and the mustangs, the school mascot, so we thought 'let's use horseshoes.'"

"The goal is to be able to go around to the fire stations and make sure that they all have some that they can hang on their doors."

In true local folklore, if a hanging horse shoe is turned up, it catches luck; if it is turned down, it spreads the luck around.

With the idea in mind, the students collected used horse shoes from throughout Milton, cleaned them of the rust and dirt, then decorated them.

This year, 150 students took part during the final week of the last school year and set upon horseshoes donated by City Manager Chis Lagerbloom.

The latest batch of decorated horseshoes were presented to the city at a recent council meeting.

"The word of what we do has spread among the students," said D'Aversa. "I think we'll have more and more students want to decorate now."

Other than the fire rescue plastic horse and using Accessmilton.com's horse logo as the city stamp, name one thing the City has done to help and protect the local horse owners and their animals.

They had it rain so that the green pasture could grow and let the horses eat.

Tim, have you lost your mind?

Tim Enloe said...

Nope. Just stating the facts.

Again, what has the city of milton done to help and protect the local horse owners and their animals?

I notice you don't have an answer.

Silly Fellow, animals don't vote!

If that logo is Accessmilton's, you should use the "Circle R" to protect it, otherwise anyone can use it. You do have it registered, right??

Tim - I believe that 7:33am was referring to the fact that you chose to make your comment under an article simply highlighting the fact that some young students are having fun and feeling involved in the city.

I second the observation....I didn't find any reference in the article about the city making claims that they are helping horse owners or animals, hence, your comment seems a bit off the wall??

Perhaps if you post an article regarding claims such as these from city officials, this topic may be more appropriate and we can all feel more comfortable commenting in a nevative vein. It seems to border on, well, just plain mean to use this story about some middle school students to tweak city officials.

Some city officials are aware of harassment and freightening of horses by Milton residents. This has been brought to their attention. One instance caused a mare to lose her foal.
The city needs to take a strong stand to protect the very animal that is symbolic of Milton. Or is this symbol depicting a horse in retreat?
The students at Hopewell Middle School in the Eco Explorers Club are involved in a wonderful project and hope this will bring more respect and recognition for these beautiful animals. Thank you.

Tim is right about protection of horses in Milton. Our city should take a strong stand against the abuse.

Oh I agree, such abuse of horses around here. It's horrible. Since you designed the City's logo what have you done Tim? Why do you care so much? Maybe the city should follow your "lead" and start a Feed-A-Horse program for all the abused animals.

Hey post 2:26 PM, you should know.

Karl:

I am glad you share your opinion from time to time on Accessmilton. I agree that I should have withheld my opinion regarding the equestrians for another story. I respect all the kids who are part of this program.

2:26pm -

You obviously don't own horses or know any equestrian folk in the area. If you did, then you wouldn't have made such an ignorant statement.

And by the way, I applaud your idea about a "Feed The Horse" program. Maybe with your guidance and expertise, not only can we feed these wonderful animals, we can also protect them from harassment and abuse.

Let me know a date and time to meet and discuss.

The city did elect a "horse's ass" to serve District 1. Isnt that enough?

And Tim, how much have you actually given to the city other than the 3 legged stupid looking horse?

"The city did elect a "horse's ass" to serve District 1. Isnt that enough?" Ummm...ok.

"And Tim, how much have you actually given to the city other than the 3 legged stupid looking horse?"

You must be new to accessmilton.com. To those regular readers, I apologize for having to list all that I have "given to the city other than the 3 legged stupid looking horse" again.

1. Donated equipment to the Milton Fire and Police Departments.
2. Voluteered and worked the first two Milton Round Ups.
3. One of the founding Members of the Milton Business Alliance (MBA)
4. Hosted the first Milton Peoples Forum with other local Milton businesses.
5. Member of CPAC.
6. By your own admission of fact, I created the city logo.
7. Played Santa Claus for the children of Milton this past year.
8. Created the Milton Farmers Market with my wife Ginger.
9. Created the Feed The Heroes program with the support of local businesses and groups.
10. Joined the Adopt a Road program on behalf of Accessmilton.com
11. Worked at the "Day of Service" event at Birmingham Park and helped remove trees and debris in addition to cleaning up trash.
12. Conducted a workshop at city hall with the focus of making Milton's open road neighborhoods safe for both commuter and resident alike.

I might be forgetting some things, but that is all can remember for now.

What about you?

All:

In order to educate my dear neighbor, you live in District 1 which is the West side of Bethany Road. District 4 is the East side of Bethany and the seat for which I ran. Nice name calling though; that helps to explain the bigger picture regarding you and yours.

Here is the link to the actual map:

You might as well start putting your name to your failed attempts at slamming me. Once again, you out yourself due to being um, how would you put it in your pc world of madness... "a person of ignorance."

All my love.

Post at 6:14 PM is hate from a three to four year resident of Milton and has continued to make life miserable for many. Is this what you have contributed?
Pathetic.

You people are so stupid, stop assuming that Rhonda Newell is making all the negative comments. She probably doesn't have time of day to give a flying sh** about this website.

What makes any of you better by posting anonymously?

...Santa isn't real??????

Hey Travis, know the facts before posting.

Tim, the "horse's ass" I was referring to if from district 1, not 4. Learn your councilmen, and women!

Also it was nice to see in the picture all getting along well, old and new, except where was OB?

Anonymous said...

So RN is Rhonda Newell, I thought it stood for Nurse. Thanks for clarifying.

She has more than the time of day and from all of her previous comments over the years, she is obsessed with this website, these blogs and Tim. I do give her a teeny tiny credit one time when he busted her for commenting and she owneds up.

Just think if you had to live across from Tim, next to Beecham, and watch your boys shoot fireworks at Tim's Mom's horse, well no wonder she is a little crazy?

After reading posts@ 8:59am; 2:06pm; 12:30pm; and 6:26pm, it appears SUNSHINE is back in town.

Rhonda did not see her boys throwing fireworks in the pasture across the street. Mrs. Enloe saw them and asked them to stop. Instead, they lit more and again threw them in her pasture.
This is cruelty to animals.

Anonymous said...

Don't let your boys grow up to be cowboys because they might turn to rustling.

Anonymous said...

Wish they lived near you. Are you located near a flood zone? This would suit them nicely. Swamp Rats.

Hello again SUNSHINE, you just can not give it up, can you. Other than being nosey, what personal interest do you own in this matter.

If Rhonda or her children bother you, call the police and if they don't respond, make a citizen's arrest and haul them in.
