City of Milton delivers annual report to residents' doors
By DOUG NURSE www.ajc.com.
City officials are mailing copies of its 2007 annual report to about 9,000 households this week, and they have tried to make it user-friendly, said Lisa Maggart, city spokeswoman.
Rather than just produce a financial spreadsheet, city staff simplified the financial aspects to two pages with graphs, and included contact names and numbers, the history of the city, a map of the city and a 2008 calendar.
"We wanted something people could hang on their wall and put down things like soccer dates so it would be useful all year," Maggart said.
The 38-page mailing is chock-full of photographs of residents at various citywide events, she said. The report came later than city officials would have liked —two months of the calendar are already passed— but that's because of problems with a vendor and an unavoidable late start in putting it together, Maggart said.
The report lists the old City Council but that was deliberate, she said. Because this is the inaugural report, it made sense to have the inaugural City Council depicted, Maggart said. The annual report also is available at City Hall, 13000 Deerfield Parkway, and will be posted online today or tomorrow at
The cost of the $20,000 annual report was born by CH2M Hill-OMI, a private firm hired by the city to provide day-to-day services.

Has anyone received their Comprehensive Plan Survey yet?
I don't know anybody in my neighborhood that has received it.
Got mine a week or so ago. Maybe because they mail to outerspace residents first.
E.T.
Actually...you couldn't have received it a week ago...per the people I've talked to, they weren't mailed out until Monday of this week...
You might want to phone home and catch a ride off the planet before your memory degrades any further...
It is not my intent to be argumentative here.
However, while in the exemption fiasco at Fulton County Tax Office, Friday 02/29/2008, neighbor said he'd received his Annual Report from Milton and asked if I'd received one and we had a discussion about the pie chart, "Where The City Gets Its Money". Therefore I had received it sometime prior to 02/29/2008. So at least two had been mailed prior to Monday of this week.
E.T.
By the way, my neighbor is not a space cadet.
We're talking about the Comprehensive Plan Survey...not the Annual Report...
Get that space taxi ticket ready...
And if you send in you raffle ticket with you Survey, you might as well print your name on the survey
Ha! I noticed the same thing! It's kind of like entering to win a drawing at a fair and then they have your address to sell to other companies. That was a good move, CH2M Hill or whomever put this survey together.
I think I'll drive mine over to City Hall.
Susan L.
Can anyone else get the stupid thing crammed into the provided envelope?
I was going to just tape mine together, but think I'll drop it off in person instead.
I will mail it in with no return address. Yes, the raffle ticket pretty much gives you away so your opinion does not remain anonymous.
My ticket went straight into file 13.
Y'all keep sending things in anonymously...gives me a better chance to win...
And I'm not afraid of voicing my opinion either...
The survey is flawed in many ways, some of the questions I find to be leading, some don't give you enough choices or answers, such as the one about types of curbs...
Also, how about we ask the people that are zoned AG-1 how they feel about being held to different standards instead of just asking those who live next to these areas...
What a joke...
Tim....Hope you know more about curbs than stuffing envelopes.
Let's assume your zoning is AG-1, would you share your feelings about being held to a different standard?
Good luck in the raffle.
Last post was intended for TRAVIS ALLEN, sorry TIM.
I'm more than happy to share my opinion...
Currently, I don't live in AG-1, but the house that I grew up in and where my parents still live is AG-1...
I'm generally not your typical "I've lived here forever and don't like new people," but I can certainly see why alot of people who have lived here a very long have issues with new folks coming in and telling the how to manage their lives...
Most of the older people that I know don't want to be bothered, or told that they now have to follow different rules because Bobby & Suzy Homeowner down the street bought a ton of land and doesn't like smelling cow patties and would rather wake to an alarm clock and not a rooster...
What right does anyone have to move here and tell these people that AG-1 has to be further regulated?
...and of course I understand that all situations are different...I think things need to handled on an individual basis if it comes to it...
Right On, Travis! I totally agree unless it has to do with the BOE purchasing land for another school that we don't need because that AG1 land is available and they need to have more room for more students moving into Alpharetta.
Honestly, I want the folks to make big bucks on their land (which they deserve) and retire to another more rural place but I'm concerned that the BOE is not exercising their right of eminent domain and just purchasing large parcels of land in Milton.
I know, Tim, which is better you will ask. Taking over people's homes or this new tactic? Both are bad but if Fulton County's BOE is taking advantage of our community by building unnecessary schools for our students and population, that is much much worse.
As the front page of this week's Milton Herald states: Milton to See a New Middle School.
In addition to a brand spanking new Milton High School, we now have Cogburn Woods Elementary, Hopewell Middle, a new elementary school being built on Birmingham Hwy. And yes, ANOTHER high school 2.3 miles down the same road as Milton HS on Freemanville.
Oh, and don't forget Summit Hill Elemenatry, Crabapple Crossing Elementary, Northwestern Middle school. Am I missing some more?
And we only have 23,000 residents and our City Council plans on upholding the one unit per acre zoning??
Yippee!! Hooray for us!
Now, when shall the rest of us sell out? I know, I know - you're thinking that I should just shut up and move.
I have to meet just a few more people and write their history, and Milton's, before it's too late!!
-Patti S.
The biggest issue I have with the Board of Education is that all these new schools that have been built or are planned...are not for the benefit of our school children in the City of Milton, but for the overflow of children in Alpharetta...
Why should our cities...Milton is not alone...share the burden of irresponsible planning on Alpharetta's part?
Why do our roads, which are already congested, have to be overburdened with traffic because of another municipalities problems?
If Alpharetta needs more room for their kids, then put the _-_-ing schools in Alpharetta!
17 schools under a 4 mile radius of the center of our City, Freemanville Road. To need 2 highschools would mean that at least 1 person from every household is between the ages of 15 and 18, 5750 students divided into 2 high schools. OMG, no we need 3 high schools not 2 in Milton due to our existing population and projected growth and density of 1 house per acre! Maybe we can get all 3 highschools on Freemanville. I am sure by now the large pasture owners are willing to sell to the BOE since they are ruining our City. What is the use of a Land Use Plan when the BOE could care less. They don't see city borders, so let's put all the schools in Milton where the grass is green and the land is fertile! No need to put them in Alpharetta, Milton was Alpharetta anyway, so what's the difference.
How about a poll Mr. Enloe on how many people in Milton actually believe that a high school is needed based on the existing population and real growth numbers, not the BS numbers being spewed out from Fulton County? But what does that matter, just keep using Milton land for chilcren from other jurisdictions, what is that hurting anyway? We're rural folk, what do we care? I hear banjos playing now.
Many Ga. cities have their own school systems eg. Buford, Gainesville, Marietta and others.
Maybe JJ (No not Janet Jackson) could look into this and possibly introduce and support legislation to create such a Milton City School System.
With our own system maybe we could import athletes and have better sports teams.
MILTON CITY SCHOOLS, WHERE WE CONTROL OUR OWN DESTINY AND SCOREBOARDS.
Good idea...but unfortunately one of the stumbling blocks to creating Milton County is the inability to create any new public school systems.
Anyone think we can overcome this obstacle and recreate Milton County? If we can recreate Milton County and can not create a new public school system aren't we in even bigger trouble?
Don't think County of Milton should have school system controlled by FCBOE (not to be confused with Benevolent protective Order of Elks) or maybe BPOE would be better than FCBOE.
Maybe BPOE could fence the Freemanville Rd site and place elks there...no they would pollute the streams and we can't have that. It appears we are in a no win situation regardless of how we turn.
If everything stays as is, only way to control athletic scoreboards is to open more and more low income high density housing in the city.
Those darn animals God created, how dare they poop on the ground.
Speaking of pooping, should there be a city ordinance requiring all cat owners to keep them inside at all times?
