Wouldn't It Be Neat?

“Wouldn’t It Be Neat?” Is a new Accessmilton.com column focused on ideas that folks have to make our Milton more unique. Send your ideas to us at magnoliamedia@yahoo.com / Subject Line: “Would It Be Neat?”

First up is an idea from Tim Enloe; Co-Founder and web master of your Accessmilton.com -

"Wouldn’t it be neat if all of our bridges In Milton were covered like the days of old? Talk about charm!"

What do you think?

You're kidding I hope.

a] GDOT wouldn't allow it.

b] In the old days people didn't haul around hay and hay bailiing equiptment

c]It would slop all truck traffic [including delivery of your new plasma flat screen] and deliverys to Publix etc.

d] Not sure about the fire trucks [but don't worry it, without the new water tower they won't be able to put out a fire anyway]

e] The garbage trucks probably wouldn't make it either.

f]Wooden bridges can burn and cost a fortune to maintain, [but we're going broke anyway so what difference would it make]

What if they weren't so much functional as in the aspects listed, but were built for their beauty over small gravel roads less traveled and over creeks, etc, walking bridges. Would be super to see in a park setting. Reminds me of the movie, Bridges of Madison County.

Thanks for all your negativity on the idea. That's real helpful. Guess we should all just move out of here since the City's going broke anyway. Amazing, you must be the same person commenting on the photography blog. Start your own blog for cryin out loud or go to the Council meetings to gripe at your leaders in person!

I think it's a wonderful idea...but there are far too many roadblocks to implement it successfully...

Most, if not all, of the covers / bridges would have to be large enough to allow large trucks / semi's to pass under, so you would lose alot of beauty just from that...

I'm sure there is somewhere in the city that a structure like this would be welcome, just not on any of the roads...

"Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves."
Carl Gustav Jung

I am sincerely sorry if you see my comments as negative. In my mind the new city is at a crisis point. The new leadership has a great opportunity to preserve and protect our city, BUT there has to be some balance between preservation and practicality.

Even the the best of causes or institutions involve financial stewardship because unfortunately in this world it takes MONEY to operate.

So the people of Milton can spend their time taking pictures of colts and waterfalls and wish for covered bridges all they want. That is their God given right.

However,I for one,do not wish to "Fiddle while Rome burns" and I would like to see more informative discussion of the critical issues. And that is my God given right.

Bye the bye the closest covered Bridge [that I know of at Pools Mill], was for many years nothing but a hangout for rednecks drinking beer.

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.

But, I did enjoy the book and the movie "The Bridges of Madison County"

I like the idea. Maybe in one of our parks or the gravel roads -- that would certainly enhance the beauty. When we get the funding to work on the park in the north sector of the city -- it would be a lovely sight there.

Good morning all. I want to take this opportunity to wish both you and yours a very happy and safe Thanksgiving!

In regards to my suggestion about the covered bridge, I appreciate both those who have questions this suggestion as well as those who have embraced it. Anyone who truly knows me will realize that I am the type of person that throws out an idea for the masses to come together on, discuss, and then decide whether or not it is worthy of further consideration.

I do find it interesting that two posts here referenced "The Bridges of Madison County" when the idea of covered bridges came to mind.
These connections show more than most might realize; it shows a look and feel for something that is nostalgic...and different. The best analogy that can be applicable here is the diamond purchased for an engagement. Men pay more for it because it is rare and hard to find much like the love of their life. That is what our Milton MUST become if we are to continue to be desireable. How many surrounding cities have coverend bridges?

Covered bridges can be built of all shapes and sizes; thus dispelling any naysayers claims that not all traffic could get through. I also believe that such construction would slow traffic down considerably; something Milton needs to get a hold on desperately. (There is no reason for anyone to be going above 45mph in our open road neighborhoods except our fire and police!)

Like any idea that is shared, one of the biggest concerns is "how would we fund it?" Great question. With that, I believe an outside of the box approach would be necessary and greating a buzz of Sponsorships would one way to go. We could also go the "Habitat for Humanity" route and encourage citizens to volunteer their time.

Miltonians love to profess our "rural" character and the "uniqueness" of the area. Should we not govern in such a different and "unique" manner as well? If we choose to govern the way so many other incorporations have, we will simply be a ticking time bomb to the monotony of the day and, in turn, we will lose our advantage.

Recently, I was searching the web for some cities that appear to share similarities to our hometown. I came upon the following site and would recommend that folk have a look. See if any ideas for us come to mind:

http://www.bloomfieldhillsmi.net/

In closing, folks who are bothered with the current state of affairs should get involved and use their energies to bring forth new and different ideas for our area. Questioning ideas others suggest without bringing a different angel to the table is just wasted time.

All the best -

Okay you're right Tim, that's great...but how quaint looking is a covered bridge that's 24 feet all?
