GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The purpose of this position is to direct and manage all fire fighting, fire prevention, and fire serviceactivities of the City of Milton. The Deputy Fire Chief serves as the manager of fire services and isresponsible for developing recommendations for the protection of life and property in the City as well as participation in policy and long-term planning. Administrative duties of this position include planning, directing, controlling department activities, including recruitment of personnel, purchasing ofequipment, control of expenditures, preparation of budget estimates, and the assignment of personnel and equipment. Reports to the Director of Public Safety.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Identifies and assesses all aspects of fire operations needs and in consultation with the Public SafetyDirector, recommend and develop strategies for meeting those needs. Develops general policies for the administration of fire operations. Directs strategic planning to implement short and long term strategies and initiatives. Allocates departmental resources appropriate to the goals and strategies.Manages the recruitment and selection of fire operations employees for employment offers, promotions, transfers, and reassignments. Supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned staff. Establishes operational standards for fire suppression and prevention. Maintains responsibility for enforcement of city ordinances pertaining to fire operations activities. Manages the preparation and administration of the annual operating and capital budgets of the Fire Operations Division of the Public Safety Department. Assigns senior personnel and delegates work for appropriate and efficient use of resources. Assesses and recommends the need for fire equipment, facilities, staffing and materials. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONSBASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

 AS/AA degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Department Administration,Public Administration, Business Administration, or closely related field; or must obtain AS/AAdegree within two (2) years. Any current or future incumbent who does not posses a degree at the time of appointment MUSTcontinuously take coursework towards the completion of a Bachelor’s degree as a condition ofcontinued employment in this position. Georgia Certified Firefighter and Georgia Certified EMT or Paramedic. Out of State applicantsmust comply within a reasonable timeframe. Ten (10) or more years fire service and emergency medical response environment with four (4) ormore years of management experience in fire service management, fiscal/budget matters, firesafety, prevention, and suppression methods, equipment, and supplies, or a related field. Any equivalent combination of education, specialized training, and experience which providesthe requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 BS/BA (a master’s degree is desirable) degree from an accredited college or university in FireDepartment Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration, or closely relatedfield. Eight (8) or more years of management experience in fire service management, fiscal/budgetmatters, fire safety, prevention, and suppression methods, equipment, and supplies, or a relatedfield. Georgia Certified Emergency Manager. Any equivalent combination of education, specialized training, and experience which providesthe requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
