Letter To The Editor

About My Brother Bernard

To the People of Milton,

Based on my brother's track record as Trustee/Executor
of the Wolff family inheritance, I feel that the people of
Milton should not vote for my brother, Bernard W. Wolff,
for city council.

He has been living on family land, which is incorporated
into a Trust controlled by him, despite the fact that the
Trust explicitly forbids him from benefitting from any
Trust properties while he is in the Trustee. He is paying
no rent to anyone for his occupancy there and
is, essentially, squatting on Wolff Family Trust property.

My mother died over three years ago, and my father
predeceased her. The family Trust requires that he
distribute our inheritance to us in a timely fashion when our
last parent expires, and when he does that he is no
longer Trustee and will have to move off of the land and

will no longer be able to control the family money. For this
reason he has been stalling on acting on these directives so
that he can continue to live on family land and money. I
have lost tens of thousands of dollars in earnings on this
Trust money because of his intransigence as Trustee.

My brother has not been gainfully employed for years
according to information from an appraiser who looked
into his financial situation this past summer. He is
essentially living off of family money and is living well.

He did not "grow up" on the family land near Milton, but
instead grew up in the Buckhead region of Atlanta, going to
Atlanta City Schools. He graduated from Northside High
School in 1960. My parents were residents of Atlanta until
their death, and my brother did not leave Atlanta until he
moved to Marietta in the 1980's. He has lived in his
present residence since 2003. His present residence was a

weekend home owned by my parents, and we had little
interaction with neighbors then who were mostly farmers
and country folk, a population far different from those
inhabiting the area now. So how does he know so
much about the community around Milton?

My message to you is this: If my brother has taken
abused his responsibility to his family in this way, what
will he do to the City
of Milton?

John McD. Wolff, MD

Faustian Twist?

Vote Bernard Wolff
Candidate Milton City Council District 1 At-Large

Demand the Milton We Were Promised
Faustian Twist?

I'm sure that you are familiar with the story about Doctor Faust, who made a bargain with the devil to obtain infinite knowledge. Faust was granted his wish, but the story had an unhappy ending when the devil claimed his part of the bargain.

We have a variation of this tale in our current election: according to publicly available lists of each candidate's contributors for the Milton City Council, candidates Lusk and Thurman are receiving significant amounts of money from those in the development community.

Now, what do you think will happen if in this case,
Thurman and Lusk are re-elected?

Millions of dollars are within reach for these contributors if Milton's ordinances can be bypassed, and uncontrolled development can be enabled by sewer extensions and zoning variances. How can such candidates be objective in their official decisions when they have received lavish sums of money to use in their campaigns to achieve their positions on the Milton City Council? Can these candidates really be trusted to enforce Milton's long range plan and resultant ordinances governing development?

There is a different twist to this Faustian Bargain in this case. It is not the candidates that suffer from the demands they must meet in return for the money, it is the citizens of Milton. Uncontrolled development is destructive to the quality of life to a community. Just ask the folks along Highway 9. The community lives with the result, not Lusk and Thurman, who are insulated from their decisions by where they live.

Voting records reveal that this is exactly
what has been happening
prior to this election.

In stark contrast Tina D'Aversa, Al Trevillyan, and I are answerable to no one other than Milton's citizens. We are private citizens funded by private citizens or by ourselves. Our campaign events have been in private homes, community clubhouses, and even horse barns with attendees sitting on hay bales.

We are seeking office to ensure that Milton will become and remain the City we were promised. We, alone, can be completely objective, and answerable solely to the citizens of Milton when zoning proposals are brought before us. We shall insist upon high quality development in compliance with Milton's long range plans, to enhance our quality of life rather than destroy it.

Let's not be subject to a "Faustian Twist". Vote for Bernard Wolff, Tina D'Aversa, and Al Trevillyan on November 3rd.

Demand the Milton we were promised!

Endorsements from Concerned Citizens for Milton.

Dear Milton Friends and neighbors,

As a fellow Milton citizen I am sure you have had your inbox bombarded with campaign information and much of it says the same thing. One thing I have noticed is that councilpersons Lusk and Thurman are not pointing to their voting record regarding land use decisions, or their campaign contributors. Also they do not talk about how poorly they have treated many of the citizens and fellow council members who have had a difference of opinion. The people we elect need to uphold the law and ordinances that protect the adjacent landowners and will shape how our city looks and is governed in the future. The people we vote to serve for the next 4 years will be making decisions for Milton's Future Land Use maps that will dictate future commercial and residential zoning. These leaders will finalize the contentious issue of the sewer service delivery map, they will plan where our new City Hall will reside, and they will continue to vote on zoning variances or change zoning ordinances that will shape our city.

My family and I are voting for Bernard Wolff, write-in candidate Al Trevillyan, and incumbent Tina D'Aversa in this election because we have studied the issues closely and watched the actions/decisions on council by the incumbents. First hand experience has led us to a decision to support this slate of candidates. Trevillyan, D'Aversa, and Wolff are good honest people who bring a great diversity of education, experience, and opinion that will serve our community greatly. We believe these candidates will not lose sight of watching out for ALL of the citizens of Milton and protect everyone’s quality of life regardless of where you live. Our city is an oasis in North Fulton County and it is important to have carefully planned development that does not follow the same mindset of the communities that surround us. We feel confident these three individuals will be leaders our city can be proud of and put an end to nasty Milton politics.

Please join us Tuesday November 3rd and vote for Wolff, Trevillyan and D'Aversa. You may take a sample ballot (attached) into the voting booth with you.

Hoping for a Milton we can be proud of,

Carter and Cary Schlenke

Question:What do the following Developers and

J. David Chatham (one of North Fulton's largest property developers)
John F. Wieland (John Wieland Homes)
Dillard and Galloway - attorneys for several local developers including John F. Wieland
Cauley Creek Water - private sewer treatment management company that operates Fulton County sewer treatment plant at Cauley Creek located in John's Creek
Nathan "Pete" Hendricks III - Fulton County-based rezoning attorney who assists developers in negotiating zoning changes
CD Lake Deerfield LLC
Carson Developments
Six Hills Phase 4 LLC
JT Adams Builders
Chatham Neighborhoods LLC
John McMillian
Lexem Development

Answer: They have all contributed to the campaigns

of Karen Thurman (District 1) and Bill Lusk (District 3).

After removing all the dirty politics, Candidates saying what they need to say to get elected and outright lies, the only sure fire way to tell fact from fiction is to follow the MONEY. Businesses, especially in these economic times, are very carefully choosing where to invest their funds for the greatest returns.

Tina D'Aversa, Bernard Wolff, and Al Trevillyan have not and will not take a dime for developers and therefore there will be no conflict of interest when they are elected to the Milton City Council.

Please Re-Elect Incumbent Tina D'Aversa in District 5 and VOTE for
Bernard Wolff in District 1 and WRITE IN Al Trevillyan in District 3.

Having watched local politics in North Fulton for the 13 years we have lived here, there is no question in my mind that if not for citizens like Tina D'Aversa, Bernard Wolff, and Al Trevillyan stepping up to the challenge of public service, Milton would have been paved over years ago. A neighbor asked me this week how he could tell whom to vote for since "they all say the same thing." I told him to look at City Council voting records, campaign contributors, and where the candidates' campaign signs are located - on property owned by actual Milton citizens or on corners owned by real estate investors/developers.
Tina, Bernard, and Al are running on a platform of managed growth, no extension of sewer, and not caving in to variance after variance proposed by those who want to bend our land use laws. Let's leave the Milton we love as a haven from sprawl and high density development. A vote for Tina D'Aversa, Bernard Wolff, and Al Trevillyan will ensure our future quality of life.

I live in Milton in a residential area near State Route 9. Nine years ago this area was rural in appearance and there was very little traffic. The area is still beautiful with ample trees and green space. However, if my neighborhood is to remain a high-quality place to live, care needs to be taken by our city leaders. We need to manage growth so that we don't overwhelm our streets and services. We need area parks for children to play in. We need City leaders who care about our quality of life and who will listen to us. I endorse Tina D'Aversa, Bernard Wolff, and Al Trevillyan because I have confidence that they share my concerns and are willing to listen and take action to represent all areas of Milton in an objective manner that reflects the wants and needs of our citizens.

We cherish the life that we live here in the beautiful city of Milton. It is for this reason that we watch closely those that dictate the future of our city. We feel that in order to preserve and protect our equestrian heritage, we must elect leaders that will, above all else listen to the voice of the people. Al Trevillyan, Tina D'Aversa and Bernard Wolff will do just that! It is with great confidence that we endorse these candidates and entrust them to do the will of the people.

With Fall we all benefit from living in our beautiful City of Milton with the leaves turning and the horses in the pastures. This time of year we need you to be thinking of preserving our small city when you go to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. We have had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know the following City of Milton candidates: Tina D'Aversa, District 5, Bernard Wolff, District 1, and Al Trevillyan, District 3. It is with great confidence that we endorse these candidates on Election day.

Our family wants what most people want-a safe, beautiful, unique community that we can be proud of. That is what the city of Milton is to us. In 2006, the city council adopted a vision statement "Milton is a distinctive community embracing small-town life and heritage while preserving and enhancing our rural character." We can resist the pressures that want to change us but it takes strong, hardworking and dedicated individuals to keep this vision alive. Tina DAversa has proven this as our council member. After reviewing their credentials and vision statements and meeting and vetting the candidates, we strongly believe Bernard Wolff and Al Trevillyan will do the same.

It is notable that the candidates I am about to recommend to you have avoided engaging in mudslinging, dirty tricks, and innuendoes. I think that candidates who engage in dirty politics to get elected will engage in dirty politics when they are in office. It therefore becomes easy to recommend these candidates. My recommendations are running their campaigns on the issues, their vision for Milton, and controlled growth, as opposed to just turning the city over to developers. I urge you to vote, and I urge you to vote to re-elect Tina Aversa, Bernard Wolff and Al Trevelyan. Thanks for your consideration,

I have known Tina for several years. She is a business person with the professional and intellectual tools essential to meet the challenges Milton is facing today. Just as important, Tina is also an honest, smart, experienced, politically savvy and fiscally conservative leader. She has been active in the community for many years as a business owner and community volunteer which makes her sensitive to the issues facing Milton. From my experience with working with Tina, she serves her community withintegrity, intelligence and ingenuity. With just a few days left before the election, your support of Tina'scampaign can make a tremendous difference in the outcome. I am asking for your support of Tina.

All three candidates share a vision for the future of Milton. They support the preserving of Milton's green space and not allowing the unnecessary over development of businesses. Although these business will bring in a tax base the question is at what cost. As I drive through our city both Crabapple and Highway 9 I see vacant structures both old and new. Some of these structures have been vacant for years. Let's say no to those who support the developers who are pushing for this overgrowth and "yes" to Tina D'Aversa, Bernard Wolff and Al Trevillyan and preservation of the city we fought to have 3 years ago.

I am pleased to announce my support for the re-election of Tina D'aversa in the coming election. I have observed Tina work on the Council in a fair and balanced manner. She has worked tirelessly for the community good dealing with Fulton County before we had a city, helped organize our city and has served on the Council for three years. During her tenure, she has followed the letter of the law in all issues that come before the council I support her efforts to maintain our rural character and our equestrian heritage, maintain low density residential and commercial development, and prevent further extension of sewer into Milton. She has always been an advocate of the diversity we cherish in our city and has a firm track record of taking joint initiatives in Parks and Recreation, Milton Disability Awareness Committee, Milton Police and Citizens Together (MPACT) and neighborhood and business crime watch programs. Tina will continue to her commitment to the community and deserves our support in this election.

We have lived in the Milton area since 1993 and have raised our three children in this beautiful area. We really love living in this city because of its rural charm and character. One of the most important things we can do for the future of our community is elect a government we know will honestly represent us, and listen to the will of the people. We believe that Al Trevillyan, Tina D'Aversa and Bernard Wolff will do just that; and we endorse these candidates.

For as long as I have lived here, I have been involved in the community to insure the Milton I moved here for was protected and preserved. Bernard Wolff, Al Trevillyan and Tina D'Aversa share my passion for Milton and understand the value of preserving the unique, rural and pastoral City of Milton. Bernard Wolff, Al Trevillyan and Tina D'Aversa know you and your issues. They have been invited into countless homes throughout the community to listen to the issues and concerns we share. Bernard, Al and Tina have met in backyards, living rooms, community club houses and horse barns. The community has reached out to them and they have reached out to us. They have been available to meet with ALL of Milton. They have heard us loud and clear and confirmed we share the same beliefs and values. Bernard, Al and Tina do not represent any special interest and are not supported by the big money of the development community. As such, they are free to make decisions that will serve the voices of the Milton Community best, consistent with our land use policies and ordinances. Your vote on Tuesday for Bernard Wolff, Al Trevillyan and Tina D'Aversa is a vote to Preserve and Protect Milton.

My support of Tina D'Aversa is grounded in my knowledge of her voting history, her list of accomplishments, and the dedication I have witnessed Tina to have over the course of my tenure on the city council. She loves our city and is a true representative of the people. She adheres to our land use plan and zoning ordinance in her decision making. She is passionate about parks and recreation and has been very active in trying to secure more parks and develop the parks we have. I believe Bernard Wolff and Al Trevillyan also care about Milton and preserving what we all love. I believe both of these gentlemen to be advocates for parks and recreation, a lean, efficient, and fiscally-sound government, economic development while preserving our rural, equestrian heritage, and appropriate growth and development. They will not sacrifice one part of town over another. I respect the differing views of my fellow council members. Having differing opinions should not be interpreted as personality conflicts or people not getting along. Open, honest debate on issues is part of what makes our country great. When that debate is silenced in the name "getting along," our democracy suffers. I support these candidates because I believe they will promote a government that is open, transparent, and fair and that represents all citizens equally. Please vote for appropriate growth candidates D'Aversa, Wolff, and Trevillyan tomorrow and together we will ensure a fiscally-sound, lean, honest government that provides outstanding essential services to our citizens.

Since its inception in 2006 the Milton City Council has been split 4 - 3 into two factions: the majority faction supports sewer expansion, inappropriate commercial growth and high density residential throughout the city; the minority faction supports no sewer expansion, controlled commercial growth in non-rural areas and adherence to the requirement of a minimum of 1 acre lots in AG-1 zoned areas. WE NOW HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO TURN OUR CITY BACK OVER TO ITS CITIZENS - TO ENABLE THE FORMER MINORITY TO BECOME THE MAJORITY. JOIN WITH US AND SHOW OUR CITY GOVERNMENT THAT WE DO CARE - VOTE FOR TINA D'AVERSA, BERNARD WOLFF, AND WRITE-IN CANDIDATE AL TREVILLYAN ON NOV. 3RD.

I moved to Milton after having been an "in-towner" for many years and traveling out here for horses since the 80s. Given our unique rural history and landscape, diversity of commercial and residential space, access to Atlanta, and high quality local schools, there is no other place in Georgia like it. Left unchecked, it seems to be a law of nature for rural areas in close proximity to metro areas to be developed until saturated. This has certainly been true in the areas around Atlanta that were "the country" not too many years ago, and are now just sprawled suburbs. They surround us. Is a "no growth" attitude sensible? Of course not. However, Milton's standards for growth and development clearly have to be set higher than surrounding communities, or we will become them. It is just common sense. Holding the line on these standards is the reason that I am supporting Tina D'Aversa, Al Trevillyan (write-in), and Bernard Wolff for the Milton City Council. I know each of them well, they are talented, experienced, and honorable people, and they share my vision for the Milton community. I urge everyone that would like to see our Milton of tomorrow much as it is today to vote D'Aversa, Trevillyan, and Wolff on November 3.

Letter To The Editor

Open Letter From John E. Flowers
(People for Milton)

An e-mail circulated on Sunday naming me as the individual who filed a PAC with the state bearing the name "People for Milton". I was identified in this e-mail solely as "a paid political consultant of the Thurman/Lusk/Longoria group". As usual, thise-mail was only partially true as it A) exaggerated my involvement given I work only with Karen Thurman, and B) left out some very important details about me. I want this opportunity to introduce myself.

I have been a resident of Milton since before incorporation. I teach History at a local college. I am a professional equestrian who is very concerned for the future of the true, competitive, business-driven equestrian community-- not the hobby farm,donkey-owning crowd. I am not merely a political consultant, but a political consultant who was intimately involved in the 2007 Milton City Council campaigns of both Alan Tart, and Julie Zahner-Bailey.

I do not take the decision of who to work for lightly, especially when it has a direct effect on where I live and work. My decision to work for Karen came after Bernard Wolff was selected to run against her and I'd had the opportunity to learn all about him that I could. What I learned made me supremely confident that Julie had not fully vetted her candidate, that Bernard is not the least bit qualified to be on the council, and that Karen's re-election is paramount to the continued stability of Milton.

Bernard Wolff is NOT:

a.. an international businessman as evidenced by the handful of shell corporations registered under his name in Georgia and readily viewed at the Secretary of State's corporation website(http://corp.sos.state.ga.us/corp/soskb/SearchOfficers.asp)

a.. a lifelong resident of Milton, as evidenced by the same corporation documents available on the state's website which clearly shows Bernard's addresses prior to 2004 in Marietta and Atlanta. (http://corp.sos.state.ga.us/imaging/11510466.pdf)(http://corp.sos.state.ga.us/corp/soskb/Corp.asp?645813)

a.. devoted to conservation, as demonstrated by the needless sale of his family's property to developers at the height of the development craze

My arguments are backed up with documentation and my name is attached to them both on this letter and via my lawful registration of an organization. My documentation comes from governing authorities and clearly state their information, without any creative explanation necessary. I dare say that I am the ONLY individual ororganization that is putting my money where my mouth is in this respect.

In 2004 Bernard Wolff was one of many swift-boat veterans who spoke out against then presidential candidate John Kerry. When the cameras were off, so too was his devotion to serving the public good. Milton does not need another show-boat politician. We need solid, proven leadership and devotion to service that won't go away when the excitement of the campaign is over. Vote for Karen Thurman on Nov. 3!

Respectfuly yours,

Jack

Milton Trusts Tina: Proven Leadership and Dedication All of Milton

News From Tina D'Aversa

Dear Milton Neighbor,

Milton has trusted Tina for the last three years because she supports all of Milton. I come before you today to respectfully ask for your support. I want to serve you for four more years. We have much to accomplish and we are well on our way!

You trust me because I am a proven leader with more than 20 years of business experience who serves Milton with professionalism and integrity. During my tenure as your Milton City Council Rep. and Mayor Pro Tem, I have worked to achieve results that benefit all Milton residents. My family and I love the vision of Milton remaining rural in nature surrounded by a well balanced diverse area that complements the equestrian community - a community that chose to settle in Milton years ago.

Mayor Joe Lockwood appointed me Mayor Pro Tem with unanimous support of my fellow council members because I am a visionary leader. I have listened to you and heard your desires and needs. I understand you because I am a mother of three sons who go to school in Milton and a business owner living along the East Highway 9 border of our city and working in the community. I teach your children and I teach our future business leaders. Because of my multi-cultural background, I understand people of all cultures, abilities and backgrounds.

Our young city needs leaders who are experienced, assertive and dedicated. My decisions on City Council and the City of Milton Steering Committee have shown fiscal responsibility, accessibility for all citizens, controlled development and preservation of our rural, equestrian character while developing our Georgia 400 Gateway. I have proven my commitment to collectively guide Milton and will continue to lead in a manner consistent with the vision of our citizens.

My accomplishments include: Developing the city infrastructure; establishing the Milton Disability Awareness Committee, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Highway 9 Design Review Board just to name a few. My role as policymaker begins with the law, and I will uphold it - on this I will not waiver!

I promise to listen to you as I have the last three years. My decision in this election was to be positive and professional; to ask for your support based on my proven record. The desperate attempts to discredit me by the Publisher of the Beacon and my political opponent do not go without concern. But, Milton is smart enough to see through the politics to the Tina that has served you selflessly for so many years.

We have made great strides in developing our unique community but have much more to accomplish including: the appropriate development of Deerfield and Highway 9, the expansion and redevelopment of Bell Memorial Ball Park and the future development of Birmingham Park. Green space, walking trails, pocket parks and other destinations that complement Milton are just a few opportunities we have before us.

I am professional representative of Milton with other municipalities, I have the support of local officials in our neighboring cities and counties.

As a fiscal conservative, I oppose tax increases and support controlled spending, developing and expanding parks and green space, accessibility for all citizens and appropriate growth and development in Milton. I need your vote on November 3 so I can continue my work as your District 5 City Council Representative.

We have so much more to accomplish!

I am supporting Tina D'Aversa (District 5), Bernard Wolff (District 1), and Al Trevillyan (District 3).

Proudly Endorses At-Large Milton City Council Candidates

Bernard Wolff (Candidate, District 1)
Al Trevillyan (Write-In Candidate, District 3)
Tina D'Aversa (Incumbent, District 5)

Dear Friends, Citizens, and Neighbors:

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd. You will have the opportunity to determine, among other things, who represents you on the Milton City Council in Districts 1, 3, and 5. Regardless of the district in which you live, you will be able to vote for all three of these positions since they are all at-large.

These past two years, I have been fortunate enough to represent you on the city council. This has afforded me a unique opportunity to get to know the members of the current council - how they govern, how they vote, and the direction I think they want to take the city. It is from this unique perspective that I provide my endorsements for this year's city council race.

Come November 3rd, I will be voting for candidates that I trust to make our Vision of Milton being "a distinctive community embracing small-town life and heritage while preserving and enhancing our rural character" a reality and who will represent ALL citizens in Milton from those living near Highway 9 to Arnold Mill Road and from Birmingham Road to Mayfield.

I will be voting for Bernard Wolff (District 1), Al Trevillyan (District 3), and Tina D'Aversa (Incumbent, District 5), and I urge you to do the same.

You may be feeling that this election is not important since this is not a national election. You may even be disinterested because you feel past elections have only resulted in broken promises. This election is extremely important and will affect your life - from your property values to the quality of life that you and your families now enjoy in our wonderful city. Please do not let apathy dictate our city's future.

We are at a crossroads. The decisions made by your city council in the next four years will set in motion the city we will become. Either we will remain the unique, rural, equestrian city we enjoy today or we will become "Every City USA" with high density development that requires a big government to maintain the accompanying infrastructure.

A lot of attention has been given to our city's finances, and claims have been made that our city cannot thrive or even survive with our current revenues. One candidate has even gone so far as to say that lack of revenue is our city's biggest threat.

As one of the seven sitting council members who has insight into our city's budget, revenues, and expenditures, I believe this kind of talk is deceptive to our citizenry and is nothing more than a battle cry to usher in high density development and sewer into our city.

Ironically, some of the same individuals who marketed for cityhood and who said we had enough money to thrive as a city are the same ones saying we do not have enough money now. Why is this?

Simply put, with existing revenues, we have enough money to pay our bills, contribute to our reserves, and make gradual improvements to our infrastructure, parks and recreation, and essential services. No, we cannot run out tomorrow and buy up a bunch of parkland, repave all our roads, and fix all of our problematic intersections, but we do have enough money to do this over time and without having to raise taxes. Isn't this what the citizens were told when the city was created? No doubt, our public safety and other essential services are better now than when we were part of unincorporated Fulton County, and plans are already underway to secure more parkland and develop the parks we currently have.

Managed, appropriately-placed, law-abiding growth and development is good for our economy and should be encouraged. Likewise, we need to be proactive in filling our vacant developments to generate revenue. It makes no sense to build more when we have vacant store fronts. Vacant store fronts and abandoned landscapes decrease our quality of life.

Our separation from CH2MHill will result in significant savings to taxpayers and better customer service. We need to form a Parks and Recreation Authority to proactively seek out alternative sources of funding and private-public partnerships. We also need to secure more federal and state grant money to improve our intersections and traffic. No doubt, if we have more high density development in Milton or encourage more east-west connectivity through our city, like several of this year's candidates have suggested, traffic will get worse and our rural, equestrian character will be diminished.

If you want our city to remain the unique, rural, equestrian refuge it is now, yet make gradual, carefully designed improvements to our parks and recreation, infrastructure, and essential services over time and within our means, then you must vote for Bernard Wolff (District 1), Al Trevillyan (District 3), and Tina D'Aversa (District 5).

Too often, a majority of our council approves variances to our zoning ordinance without the demonstrated hardship required by law. This has resulted in higher density, higher intensity of use development than what our zoning ordinance and land use plan allow.

In addition, at the request of Fulton County, a majority on council voted to extend sewer in Sept 2008. Sewer is a precursor to high density development. Some may argue that we can have sewer and control density through zoning. While this may be true in theory, there is not example of this in Georgia. In addition, it depends on having leaders who consistently vote to adhere to our zoning ordinance and land use plan and are not swayed by developer interests.

This kind of decision making has left our Vision in peril and has resulted in precedent-setting changes that are detrimental to our city. This cannot be allowed to continue.

Bernard Wolff (Candidate for Milton City Council, District 1)

I believe Bernard Wolff is who Milton needs in District 1. He is a smart, thoughtful man who cares about the people of our City. He will represent ALL citizens, not just the ones who he knows or who live in his area of town. Bernard received an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. Now retired, he has over 30 years experience in international business, specializing in starting up small American companies to trade American products abroad. He served as an officer in the US Navy including a combat tour in Vietnam as Skipper of a Swift boat. I believe Bernard has the leadership skills and financial and business acumen necessary for city council. Bernard has no ties to developers - financial or otherwise. That, coupled with his background and experience, will allow Bernard to make sound, unbiased decisions grounded in the law. Bernard also opposes sewer extension. He is not against development, but he believes that developers should follow our zoning ordinance and land use plan and that variances should only be given when an extreme hardship exists. He is also passionate about parks and recreation. Please learn more about Bernard from visiting his website at http://www.bernardwolff4milton.com/.

Al Trevillyan (Write-in Candidate for Milton City Council, District 3)

I believe that Al Trevillyan will bring unique experience and ideas to our city. Al is intelligent and well versed on all the issues facing Milton. He has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Purdue University and had a distinguished career as a research chemist. He also has many years of volunteer experience in local government and has been involved in charting our city's future since our inception. He is a former member of Milton's Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC) and has experience as a member of an economic development commission in Illinois. Al believes that the city should raise revenue by proactively seeking quality businesses to come to Milton to fill our empty store fronts and strip malls. He is opposed to sewer extension or high density development. He also understands the importance of adhering to our zoning ordinance, design guidelines, and land use plan. I believe Al will be extremely proactive in funding the necessary programs to keep crime at bay in Milton and our citizens safe. He has committed to having regular meetings with Milton's citizenry, and I believe he will be a fine addition to our council and someone who will value each and every citizen in our city - no matter where you live. Please learn more about Al from visiting his website at al4milton@comcast.net.

Tina D'Aversa (Incumbent for Milton City Council, District 5)

Tina D'Aversa has faithfully served the citizens of Milton on city council for the last three years and was very active in our city's planning stages as a member of the City of Milton Steering Committee. Tina has kept her commitments to citizens. She has a proven track record of opposing sewer expansion, high density development, and variances. She has been proactive in working to secure additional parkland and in developing our current parks. She was the sponsor of the resolution to form the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and plans to bring a resolution forward to form a Parks and Recreation Authority. This will allow the City to explore alternative funding sources for parks and recreation. Tina has assured accessibility and inclusion for all citizens regardless of background, ethnicity, and ability levels. She sponsored the resolution to form the Milton Disability Awareness Committee. Over the past two years, Tina and I have partnered to introduce initiatives to improve the look and feel of the Highway 9 area and the quality of life of citizens living in the area. This included hosting the city's first ever town hall meeting for citizens living in the Highway 9 area in Districts 5 and 6. An outcome of this meeting was the creation of the Highway 9 Design Guidelines Committee - a collaborative group composed of citizens and business owners in the Highway 9 area whose task is to upgrade the building, architectural, and landscaping standards for the Highway 9 area. Tina and I have been proactively working with city staff to create Milton Police and Citizens Together (MPACT) - an initiative to be launched in the coming months that will have the goal of reducing crime through education, enhanced awareness, and implementation of neighborhood and business crime watch programs. You can trust that Tina will continue her solid track record of accomplishments that will benefit all citizens. Please visit Tina's website at www.tinadaversa.com to learn more about her.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent you on the city council. I look forward to continuing my work with my fellow council members including Tina D'Aversa, Bernard Wolff, and Al Trevillyan in 2010. I feel with Tina re-elected and with the addition of Bernard and Al, we will accomplish great things for our city and do so in a positive, proactive manner.

An Equestrian Community Doesn't Include Trojan Horses

Vote Bernard Wolff
Candidate Milton City Council District 1 At-Large

Demand the Milton We Were Promised

Our first home was in a small community outside of Atlanta. It consisted of quaint buildings with a cozy restaurant, antique and specialty shops in historic buildings and shopping and schools within easy driving distance. The neighborhoods were tastefully designed, with scenic roads winding through wooded areas. The homes reflected a middle class, family-oriented community.

As more people moved into the neighborhood, rumors began to circulate about developers moving in. This led to community meetings organized by a pleasant lady who identified herself as a "concerned resident." Initial meetings discussed the need to resist losing the quaint core of the community to high density development. This evolved into meetings about proposed projects. Strangely, the pleasant lady organizer gradually shifted positions to one of "inevitability" of development and the need to "compromise" to minimize the negative impact.

Two years later, the community was littered with high density apartments and condominiums. Traffic clogged the village and still does. We learned that the "pleasant lady" who represented the community was a "Trojan Horse" secretly working for developers anxious to bypass community standards and preferences.

After the damage was done, the residents rose up again and pressured the county and developers to build a shopping area with strict design guidelines that yielded a tasteful dining and shopping area that reflected the former village appearance. Unfortunately, the problems of aberrant high density development remain.

Milton residents face a similar challenge now: Will we preserve and improve Milton in the manner we were promised? I believe we can if the current majority on the Milton City Council is relegated to a minority on November 3rd. If elected, I will:

Follow the existing Milton community plans and ordinances that control development where needed while retaining the rural character. The current Majority, including my opponent, consistently votes to ignore the community plans and ordinances by granting variances to developers.

Attract desirable businesses to fill the 1,000,000 square feet of empty commercial space in Milton, rather than building additional commercial projects to "generate tax revenue" as promoted by my opponent. Empty commercial space consumes rather than generates City revenue. The new businesses will generate tax income IF the businesses offer products and services that Milton citizens actually want. The current majority, including my opponent, could not care less about what we want. Instead, their focus is on revenue generation for the City regardless of negative impact on our citizens.

Expand Parks and Recreation Areas: While the economy has reduced tax revenue, it has a positive side of reducing demand for property. Landowners are more amenable to selling their properties at an affordable price and under innovative terms of payment that are affordable for Milton. New properties so acquired offer parks and recreation areas for the community to enjoy. New recreation areas not only generate income to the city, they also attract visitors who will patronize events and spend money in the properly developed commercial areas. They provide Milton citizens with sports programs that are unavailable now.

Promote Equestrian activities: These attract large numbers of affluent visitors who will generate significant income for the City. Milton can "partner" with surrounding communities such as Roswell and Alpharetta to promote Equestrian activity. Empty commercial areas can attract businesses that attract customers attending equestrian activities.

Ensure that Milton City Government is small, efficient, and responsive to its citizens. Tight "line item" budgets with accountability, possibly outsourcing services under strict contractual guidelines (missing up until now), and limiting services to those appropriate for rural areas, and the urban Highway 9 area, respectively.

I am not alone in my conviction that Milton can thrive as promised. A recent state-commissioned report stated that the Milton reflected in existing Community Plans is entirely viable if services are well provided but limited to what is actually needed. These include Police, Fire, 911, road maintenance and parks and recreation areas.

Finally, we need to recognize who is and who is not promoting the Milton we were promised. My opponent's contributors and supporters reveal her close association with the development community. This qualifies her as a "Trojan Horse" who promises a rural Milton paid for by high density development by consistently voting for zoning variances and sewer extensions.

We want development strictly controlled by community plans and ordinances to reflect the Citizens' wishes, rather than destructive, uncontrolled development such as most of us have witnessed.

That Vision Thing: An open letter from Joe Longoria to Milton citizens

Vision

Vision can be defined as the ability to picture one's future success. Milton's vision includes the desire to remain true to its rural property and lifestyle - an important part of our city's unique, inviting strength, which must be preserved. This has been staunchly supported by all of the candidates for Milton City Council. However, Milton's defined footprint is also composed of vibrant residential property as well as largely undeveloped parklands and vacant commercial properties. To ensure that our city continues to thrive, our vision for the future must include those elements that will make Milton strong and inviting.

Strategy

To achieve this vision requires an active strategy for bridging the present to the future. It must be an on-going process that is fluid and dynamic, not static. We must continually review and measure it against our city's changing needs to ensure that it is on-target and guiding relevant decisions.

Leadership Requirements

Effective strategy requires strong leadership. Our city's vision can only be achieved with city leaders who listen to all-not just to some-of its citizens. Milton requires leaders who are skilled at identifying problems, and who have the capability of initiating the type of change that bridges present reality to our vision for the future. Failure to respond to and adapt to our city's needs leads to a loss of connection to our community. Elected officials who cannot adapt, who are one-sided and inflexible, risk failure at the expense of our city.

In this campaign, my opponent has portrayed herself as one who is aligned with one portion of our community and against another, further dividing our rural and residential citizens at the expense of creating unity and positive action for Milton as a whole. She has not identified a clear strategy for bridging diverse lifestyles or managing and funding appropriate growth into the future. What she has done is alienate part of the very citizenry she is obligated to serve and in doing so has failed to offer an effective strategy for creating a unified, fiscally thriving Milton. With all due respect, this is not leadership.

My vision and strategy for Milton

My vision for Milton is to maintain and enhance our wonderful rural environment within a unified city where people of diverse perspectives live cohesively and without rancor. I want to see our city respected by other cities and by the State of Georgia. My vision of the future includes wonderful parks, equestrian trails and pedestrian walkways as part of a prosperous city with adequate revenue sources to support the services our citizens want and deserve.

As a member of the City Council I will apply my background, skills and total commitment to help build that bridge to the future.
As always, if you would like to contact me directly, please feel free to contact me directly at: joe4milton@gmail.com or (770) 634-0080.

I will look forward to working with you in the years to come to better serve our City of Milton.

Sample Ballot for Write-In Al Trevillyan

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

As you know, I am running as a WRITE-IN candidate for the 3rd District seat on the Milton City Council. You also know that I chose to run because I could not accept Mr. Lusk running unopposed.

I have attached a sample ballot because many of you have expressed concern about how to vote for a write-in candidate and how to remember to spell my name correctly. This sample ballot illustrates the ballot and the keyboard you will use to type in my name and brief instructions.

You may take this into the voting booth to help you make the selections you want.

The Director of Fulton County Registration & Elections confirmed that you may take a sample ballot into the voting booth.

Please give me your support in this election and pass on my message to your friends.

My Commitment to You:

All my actions will be in support of our City of Milton Mission and Vision statements.

I support development in a controlled manner consistent with our comprehensive plan.

I will oppose any efforts to increase density, including extension of sewer service.

I will support improvements to our infrastructure, assigning highest priority to those that improve the safety and well being of our citizens, including a Public Safety Complex in the Highway 9 / Deerfield area.

To generate NEW tax revenue, I will recommend formation of an Economic Development Commission that will find quality businesses to fill the many empty store fronts and offices throughout our city.

I will support appropriate development in the Highway 9/Deerfield and Crabapple areas that is consistent with our Comprehensive Plan.

I will hold regular public meetings to represent all Milton citizens in my decision making and will not favor one area of Milton over another.

I will work to secure new parkland for those areas in our city that do not have access and to improve our existing parkland.

Milton is an oasis, surrounded by high density development. Together we can maintain our rural character, preserve our equestrian heritage, and build a city that will be the envy of our neighbors.

Please help me preserve Milton. I need your write-in vote.

So, What Are You Doing November 4th?

By Tim Enloe;
Accessmilton.com

No, the date is correct. What are you doing November 4th;
the day after Milton's third city council election? Are you
going to revert back to your daily life of to and from, up and
at 'em and time to go to bed or are you going take your
energies spent here over the last sixty days and channel them
to make Milton, GA a better place?

Many past candidates continue to work hard for Milton even
after they were the lesser choice. Names such as Paul Moore,
George Ragsdale, Eddie Moore, Marty Lock, John Carroll,
Gordon Hunter, and even me, Tim Enloe.

Fantastic volunteers have worked hard for the betterment of
Milton. Names such as Travis Allen, Lauren Holmes, Terry
Mechling, Jan Fowler, Lisa Cauley, and
Kevin White have been active since day one.

A good council can be wonderful thing; and active constituency
can be something even better. Milton can be something special.
Milton can be something great. All we have to do is let actions
speak louder than words and don't hesitate.

VOTE TINA D'AVERSA NOVEMBER 3!

Experienced, professional, caring mother - all describe me, Tina D'Aversa, your Milton City Council Rep. and Mayor Pro Tem. I have worked to achieve results that benet all Milton residents.

Mayor Joe Lockwood appointed me Mayor Pro Tem with unanimous support of my fellow council members. Our young city needs leaders who are experienced and assertive. My decisions on City Council and the City of Milton Steering Committee have ensured scal responsibility, accessibility for all citizens, controlled development and preservation of our rural, equestrian character. I have proven my commitment to e-ectively guide Milton and will continue to lead in a manner consistent with the vision of our citizens.

My accomplishments include: Developing city infrastructure; establishing the Milton Disability Awareness Committee, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Highway 9 Design Review Board. My role as policy maker begins with the law, and I will uphold it - on this I will not waiver!

We have made great strides in developing our unique community but have much more to accomplish including: the appropriate development of Deereld and Highway 9, the expansion of Bell Memorial Park and development of Birmingham Park. Green space, pocket parks and a library are just a few opportunities I am focusing on now.

I oppose tax increases and support controlled spending, developing and expanding parks and green space, accessibility for all citizens and appropriate growth and development. I need your vote on November 3. I want to continue my work as your District 5 City Council Representative.

We have so much more to accomplish!

- Tina D'Aversa

News From Tina D'Aversa

Dear Milton Neighbor,

Thank you for supporting me for re-election to the Milton City Council. I wanted to share an ad that is published in the Milton Herald this week. All of my ads have been positive and factual.

It is important that you vote November 3, 2009. In order to preserve our community and protect the equestrian lifestyle nestled in a balanced business arena. We must continue to elect leaders who have the interest of our community at heart; leaders who will remain strong when political pressure is on; leaders who will vote to uphold the law and our land use plans even when development pressures are strong. Yes, we need funding for our city, but we have many options and do not need to lose sight of the reason we incorporated as a city: Local control to preserve and protect our diverse, rural lifestyle.

I have served all of Milton with the highest integrity. My opponent's desperate attempts to discredit me have failed. Milton residents are to smart to believe politically motivated rhetoric. I trust you and the good citizens of Milton to review my record and know that I am here for one reason...to serve my community as I have for many years. If you have any questions, I ask you to call me at 678-457-0677. If you were unable to hear me speak at the Magnolia Media Debate October 15, 2009, please call me. I am honored to serve as your representative and you deserve answers to your questions from me not my political opponents or the news media. I have not changed my vision for Milton....if you love the diverse cultural character of Milton, do something to support the vision:

Vote November 3, 2009, Tina D'Aversa, a community leader you can trust to support you; be fair and uphold the vision of Milton!

Will Sanity ever exist on Milton City Council?

The Lusk Letter

Friends and Neighbors of Milton,

We are in the final days of the 2009 Milton City election campaign. Emotions are at a fever pitch; Accusations are in flight; The slander is rampant. Whom do you believe? What do you believe? Why should you even bother voting? These are all valid questions.

Over the past several days, a number of false accusations have been leveled at me and another member of council that we want to bring in large scale development, high density development, pave over paradise, extend sewers for development, etc. These are absolutely ludicrous.

Not only in the past three years, but over the last decade, I have fought to protect the unique character of Milton. That's why I moved here and settled on a rural gravel road. My family is truly conservation minded and we love the lifestyle that can only be found here.

I have done and -- if you reelect me -- I will continue to fight to preserve Milton's unique lifestyle and character, opposing development or things that contribute to any development that would harm, change or infringe on our unique community.

In the first two city elections we witnessed character assassinations, prevarications, and misrepresentations. Just when we all thought that our City had matured, the same old behavior returns. Is that what you expect from adults and especially Public Servants who are responsible for investing your tax dollars in the community and determining your laws and regulations? I think not. Is record of service important to you? Is honesty? Is service to the community, family, Country and God important to you? If so, my name is Bill Lusk. My record speaks for itself.

For the past three years I have been your Councilman from District 3. I have served with the same commitment that I served my Country in war, my community in peace, my family in life, and my God in my soul. I ask for your support and vote on Tuesday November 3rd to send me back to serve you for four more years.

Thank you,

And Then There Were Four.

Courtesy The Beacon / Tim Enloe / Contributing Writer/AccessMilton.com

The Milton Debate went forward, without Julie Zahner-Bailey's council slate of candidates.

This past wednesday night, another Milton debate transpired. This time around the event organizer was Beacon Media with host Atlanta National Golf Club.
Moderators were Jonathan Copsey and John Fredricks of The Beacon.

In attendance with Mayor Joe Lockwood were council candidates Joe Longoria, Bill Lusk, and Karen Thurman. Absent were candidates Tina D'Aversa, Al Trevillyan, and Bernard Wolff citing scheduling conflicts.

With a crowd of 25 to 30 citizens in attendance, the protocal called for 90, 60, and 30 second answers.

The first question focused on Mayor Lockwood's support of all three incumbants and his continued faith in D'Aversa. Other issues addressed were sewer vs septic, park land use, as well as the city's financial state.

Bill Lusk, candidate for the district three seat, was pleased with the venue. "It was a pleasure to participate in the Debate sponsored By the Beacon and held at Atlanta National on Wednesday Night last. The questions posed to those serious candidates Who took the time to show up, were the ones that truly are Of concern to our residents," Lusk said, "It is disconcerting to know that Three of the proclaimed candidates chose to Boycott the event. One can only surmise as to their reluctance to expose themselves To the real issues and search for the truth."

District 1 candidate Karen Thurman concured, "I thought the debate was very professionally run. The questions for each candidate were both unbiased and direct. They were also relevant to all of us that live in Milton."

Mayor Lockwood, running unopposed this season, was still invited to participate. "I enjoyed having to opportunity to share my thoughts and visions with our citizens"

The discussion lasted for roughly and hour and half with cocktails and Hors d'oeuvres prior and a cash bar after.
